Luxury Travel in Chengdu: Can You Still Pay to Be a Panda Keeper for a Day?

No. No official panda base near Chengdu sells a paid "panda keeper for a day" session. The only volunteer route the bases publish is a long-term programme at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and it requires fluent written Chinese. The Dujiangyan site once linked with keeper experiences is closed for renovation. In and around Chengdu city, what you can book officially is a timed entry to the Chengdu base, a ticket to Dujiangyan Panda Valley, and a guide or audio guide once you are inside. Going early in the day matters more than anything you can pay extra for.

Can you still be a "panda keeper for a day"?

Here is the situation at each place that has been sold as a keeper or volunteer experience.

Chengdu Research Base: a real volunteer programme, but not for tourists

The Chengdu base (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地, Chéngdū Dàxióngmāo Fányù Yánjiū Jīdì) does recruit volunteers, but they are science-education volunteers who explain pandas to visitors. Applicants must be at least 14 (with written guardian consent under 18), be in good health, read and write Chinese fluently, pass a selection round, training and an exam, and commit to at least 60 hours of service after starting; the base says the programme does not suit people who only want short or temporary volunteering. Recruitment runs twice a year, in spring and autumn; the 2025 intake trained at the Chengdu base and at Dujiangyan Panda Valley, and you apply through the base's WeChat (微信, Wēixìn) official accounts or mini-program, then go through an online interview, offline training, an exam and an internship period.

So this is a volunteer role you apply for months ahead, not a ticket you buy for a day off your holiday. You can read the conditions yourself on the Chengdu Panda Base volunteer page (in Chinese).

Dujiangyan: Panda Valley is open, the China Giant Panda Garden is closed

Dujiangyan, a satellite city whose trains from Chengdu's Xipu station take roughly 20 to 30 minutes, has two panda sites, and older guides often mix them up. Dujiangyan Panda Valley (熊猫谷, Xióngmāo Gǔ) is run by the Chengdu base; its official channel sells a normal entry ticket of 55 yuan for adults aged 18 to 59, booked online in advance through the "Panda Valley" WeChat account, with passports checked by hand at the gate. Unlike the Chengdu base, Panda Valley has no Trip.com or English booking route, so without WeChat you will need help; a hotel concierge or guide may be able to book it for you, so ask when you arrange your day. None of its official channels we can find lists a paid keeper or volunteer day.

The other site, the Dujiangyan base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (都江堰中华大熊猫苑, Dūjiāngyàn Zhōnghuá Dàxióngmāo Yuàn, "China Giant Panda Garden"), has been closed since 23 April 2026 for renovation, and no reopening date had been announced. If someone is still selling you a "Dujiangyan volunteer day", that is the first thing to ask them about.

Wolong Shenshuping: open, but we found no official keeper product

The Shenshuping base of the Wolong China Giant Panda Garden (卧龙神树坪基地, Wòlóng Shénshùpíng Jīdì) has almost the same English name as the closed Dujiangyan garden, but it is a different site run by the same research centre. In the mountains of Aba prefecture, it was open over the 2026 National Day holiday with more than 80 pandas living there and 47 on daily display, including Fu Bao, the panda who came back from South Korea; the base says pandas are most active from 9:00 to 11:00 and 14:30 to 17:00. It is a much longer trip than Dujiangyan, so it only makes sense if you have a full day and a driver.

You will still find travel agencies and booking apps advertising paid "keeper" or "volunteer" days at Shenshuping or Panda Valley. None of the bases' official channels we can find list them, so treat them as unverified: you may pay a premium for what turns out to be a normal visit with a guide.

What a high-end panda day looks like instead

A better panda morning is mostly about timing and help. Book the earliest entry slot, go straight to the enclosures while the pandas are feeding, and hire a guide. The Chengdu base offers guided explanation at its south and west gates from 7:30 to 17:30, and a whole-park audio guide costs 30 yuan a day, available in Chinese and English. Can you hold a panda or pose with one?

No. Commercial close-contact activities such as holding a panda were stopped in Sichuan in 2018, according to media reports at the time, and those reports said the rule also covered close contact sold under the name of "volunteering". None of the official bases lists any holding, hugging or close-up photo product today.

What you can do is photograph pandas from the public viewing areas. A phone with a good zoom does the job, and the morning feeding hours give you the most movement. Any seller who promises a panda in your arms is offering something the bases themselves do not sell.

Booking the Chengdu base itself

All entry to the Chengdu base is by online real-name reservation with a daily cap of 85,000 visitors, open up to 14 days ahead, through the base's WeChat account or authorised platforms including Trip.com; tickets for a day stop when that day sells out, and passport holders use a separate "Lane for Passport & Other Documents" at the gate. If you want an early slot, book as soon as your date opens. An adult ticket is 55 yuan, valid for one morning or afternoon entry on the date you booked.
