Voltage and plugs: mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan
WhereVoltageFrequencySockets and plugs
Mainland China220 V single-phase50 HzStandard wall plate: two-pin and three-pin sockets kept separate (five holes). Universal-hole sockets (two-pin and three-pin merged into 3 holes) have been banned from production since Jun 1, 2010.
Hong Kong220 V single-phase50 HzAppliances that plug into a socket must have a three-pin plug that meets safety requirements; the safety standard cited by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) is BS 1363. Two-pin plugs only for BS 4573/EN 50075 bathroom shaver sockets. Appliances rated below 200 V must not be connected directly to the 220 V supply; set any voltage selector to 220 V.
Macau230 V single-phase50 HzSockets are usually three-pin, square or round; the Macao Government Tourism Office advises checking the socket before use.
Taiwan110 V60 HzAppliances from Europe, Australia or Southeast Asia need a plug adapter or transformer (Taiwan's tourism authority). Many buildings also have 220 V outlets, mainly for air conditioning.

Common questions

Do I need a plug adapter for China?

Most visitors do. Chinese sockets are built for Chinese plugs, and compliant sockets do not take most foreign plugs. Most phone and laptop chargers handle the local voltage. See the plugs and adapters guide.

Can I take my power bank on flights and trains in China?

Yes, in your hand luggage, within the capacity limits. For flights within China it also needs a clear CCC mark on the casing. The plugs and adapters guide explains how to read the label.

Is there a luggage limit on high-speed trains?

Yes. There are weight and size limits for what you carry on, and large items can go by the railway's separate luggage service. The luggage rules guide compares trains, domestic flights and the metro.

What should I sort out before I fly to China?

Check your passport and entry route, fill in the arrival card, set up payment apps with a card, and check any medicine against China's rules. The pre-departure checklist goes through each step.
