Changbai Mountain Guide: North or West Slope, Winter, Tickets and Getting There

Changbai Mountain (长白山, Chángbái Shān, "Ever-White Mountain") in Jilin province is not one park with one gate. It is three separate scenic areas, north, west and south, and each one has its own ticket and its own timed, real-name booking. If you only have time for one, pick the north area: it has the road up to the viewpoint over Tianchi (天池, "Heaven Lake"), the crater lake at the top, plus the big waterfall and the hot springs. The west area is the one where you climb 1,442 steps to the crater rim. In winter the north and west areas stay open and only the south area closes. By high-speed train, the fastest trip from Shenyang North to Changbaishan Station takes 1 hour 53 minutes, and there are direct trains from Harbin that take about three and a half hours. One thing to check before anything else: Jilin province is outside the 240-hour visa-free transit scheme, so you cannot come here if you enter China on that transit permit.

Korean travellers know the same mountain as Baekdu-san (백두산, 白头山). Its highest peak on the Chinese side, Baiyun Peak, is 2,691 metres, the highest point in Northeast China, and the area is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO Global Geopark. Which Area to Visit and How Many Days

The three areas sit on different sides of the mountain, far enough apart that they work like three different destinations. Each has its own way up to a view of Tianchi, but the rest of what you see is different.

• North area (北景区, also called the North Slope, 北坡 Běipō). The classic choice. In summer 2026 the open sights were Tianchi, the waterfall, the hot springs, Xiaotianchi (小天池, "Little Heaven Lake"), Lvyuan Pool (绿渊潭) and the Underground Forest. A vehicle takes you most of the way to the lake viewpoint, so it suits almost everyone. The official estimate for a full visit is 6–8 hours in peak season, not counting queues. It is also the easiest to reach: Changbaishan Station is 9 km by road from the north area's visitor hub.
• West area (西景区, West Slope, 西坡 Xīpō). Here you see Tianchi after a long staircase climb, and you can add the Jinjiang Canyon. Plan on 5–6 hours. Its nearest station is Changbaishan West (长白山西) in Songjianghe town, a different station from Changbaishan Station. The west visitor hub is about 100 km from the north one.
• South area (南景区, South Slope, 南坡 Nánpō). The smallest visit, about 3–4 hours, and the farthest away, about 170 km from the north visitor hub. It closes for the winter: in 2026 it closed on 16 October.

Our advice for a first visit: do the north area. Add the west area if you want the climb and a second look at the lake from a different angle, or if you are coming in winter and want the snow activities there. Leave the south area for a return trip unless you have a car and driver and extra days.

How many days. Two days is the comfortable minimum: arrive on day one, spend all of day two in the north area. Three days lets you add the west area, or keep a spare day in case the lake viewpoint is closed by weather on your first try. Tickets are valid only on the day you booked, and each area is booked separately, so a spare day means a new booking, not a second visit on the same ticket.

The mountain is a long way from the big cities by road. The town that serves the north area, Erdaobaihe, now Chibei district, is 550 km from Changchun and 210 km from Yanji. The train makes those distances manageable, and you cannot drive your own car inside the scenic areas anyway: everyone rides the park's own buses.

Seasons, Weather and Tianchi

The weather at the top decides your day more than anything else. The national weather station next to Tianchi sits on Tianwen Peak at 2,623 metres. Its annual average temperature is −7.3 °C, it gets 1,333 mm of rain and snow a year, clear days are few, and thick fog and strong wind are normal. The park itself warns that sudden strong gusts, extreme cold and icing, blizzards and heavy fog are common, and that Tianchi and other high sights close whenever it is not safe to open them.

So the lake viewpoint opens when the weather allows, and that is decided on the day. The areas open from 8 am, and whether the Tianchi viewpoint opens depends on the weather and the road that morning. On 27 January 2026, for example, the Tianchi viewpoints in both the north and the west areas were closed because of snow and wind, while the other sights stayed open. Nobody can promise you a view of the lake, in any month. What you can do is give yourself a spare day and check the forecast.

The park recommends checking the 长白山气象台 (Changbai Mountain Meteorological Observatory) WeChat account before you book, and the 长白山 (Changbai Mountain) official account or mini-program for announcements on the day you go. If the lake closes, unused tickets bought on the official platform can be refunded with no fee if you apply before midnight on the booked day. That makes a two-day plan simple: book one morning, look at the forecast the evening before, and move the booking if it looks bad.

What each season is like:

• Summer (roughly June to September). All three areas are open, the forests are green and the roads and paths are clear of snow. This is also when the most people come, so book early. The south area opens each year around mid-May; in 2025 it opened on 1 May.
• Autumn. Short. The forests change colour and the first snow can come early. The south area closed for winter on 16 October in 2026, so an autumn trip is mainly a north or west trip.
• Winter. The north and west areas stay open all year. Expect deep snow, a partly frozen waterfall, steam over the hot springs and very cold wind at the top. In the west area the summit trip in winter is by snowmobile. See the winter section below.
• Spring. Snow stays on the upper mountain long after the cities thaw. Check what is open before you book, and do not count on the south area until its reopening is announced.

Tickets and Timed Booking

The two rules that catch people out: every area is booked on its own, and every ticket is valid only on the day and time slot you booked. The old "one ticket for five days, north and west together" offer was ended on 1 July 2023, so posts online that still mention a five-day ticket are out of date.

What you pay. The entry ticket alone does not get you up the mountain. You also buy the park transport, and the full set is what most people need. These are the most recent published prices, from August 2025; the 2026–27 winter prices have not been announced yet, so check the booking page for today's price.

• North area: entry 105 yuan, plus the Chibei shuttle line 35 yuan, the eco-bus 85 yuan and the Tianchi summit vehicle 80 yuan, all return trips. Added up, the full north set comes to 305 yuan — check the booking page for the current total.
• West area in winter: entry 105 yuan, plus the Chixi shuttle line 19 yuan (or the Baixi line 14 yuan), the eco-bus 85 yuan and the summit snowmobile 165 yuan.
• South area: entry 105 yuan plus the eco-bus 85 yuan.

Half-price combination tickets exist for full-time students up to bachelor's level, young people aged 7 to 18 and people aged 60 to 64; people 65 and over get a separate discounted set; children under 7 or 1.2 metres and shorter go free. If you are a student, bring your card and ask at the counter whether a foreign student card counts before you pay full price. Each year on 19 May, China Tourism Day, entry is free, but you still pay for the buses. Travel apps and tour sellers sometimes bundle tickets at a different price, so compare before you buy.

The table below puts the prices, booking rules and check-in hours for the three areas side by side.

How booking works. Tickets are sold by real name for a set entry time, and you get in by face recognition at the check-in gate. You can book up to 7 days ahead. Tickets for a newly opened date go on sale at 18:00 each day, refunded tickets come back at 18:30, and a small number are released on the day, both online and on site. The official sales channels are the 长白山 (Changbai Mountain) WeChat official account, the 长白山 mini-program and the 长白山一机游 ("Changbai Mountain one-phone trip") mini-program. All three run inside WeChat, so set up WeChat with a payment method first; our WeChat Pay guide covers linking a foreign card.

A passport works as your ID: after booking you do not swap your booking for a paper ticket, and passport holders show an electronic QR code that carries the passport number used for the booking. Paying online with a foreign passport is the step that can fail. If the mini-program will not accept your passport, ask your hotel to help you book, or buy at the visitor centre if same-day tickets remain — confirm with your hotel the evening before which option works.

A few more rules:

• You must check in during your booked time slot; you cannot check in early.
• Within any 7 days you can buy one set per area, and only one north-area summit vehicle ticket and one west-area winter snowmobile ticket; you cannot buy another until the first is used or refunded.
• Unused tickets bought on the official platform can be refunded free of charge until midnight on the booked day.

Where you check in. For the north area, check-in is at the Chibei Transport Hub (池北区交通集散中心), the north area visitor centre or the Huangsongpu Transport Hub; for the west area at the Baixi Transport Hub, the Chixi Transport Hub or the west area visitor centre; for the south area at the south area visitor centre. Check-in closes early. In summer 2026 it ran 7:00–14:30 in the north (summit vehicle tickets until 15:30), 7:30–13:30 in the west and 8:00–14:30 in the south. Last winter (2025–26) it ran 8:00–13:30 in the north and 8:00–13:00 in the west; the 2026–27 winter hours will be in the park's announcements, so check them before you book. In practice, book a morning slot. It gives you time for the full circuit and a better chance of still catching the summit vehicle if the lake opens late.

Getting to Changbai Mountain

For most visitors the train is the way in. The Shenyang–Baihe high-speed line opened on 28 September 2025 and cut the trip from Shenyang North to Changbaishan Station to 1 hour 53 minutes at the fastest; at opening, the fastest train from Beijing Chaoyang to Changbaishan took 4 hours 33 minutes. The train times and fares below are from the 12306 timetable for one sample travel day, 5 November 2026. Timetables change, so treat the counts as a guide and check your own date when you book.

First, the two stations. Changbaishan Station (长白山站) is on the north side, next to Erdaobaihe, and is the one for the north area. Changbaishan West (长白山西) is on the west side and is the one for the west area. Make sure your ticket is for the right one.

• From Shenyang: about 10 trains are scheduled that day from Shenyang North to Changbaishan, leaving between 07:29 and 21:28; the fastest takes 1 hour 53 minutes, most take about 2 hours and one slow train takes nearly 4; second class costs 196–275 yuan depending on the train. A few more leave from Shenyang Station and Shenyang South. For the west area, about 5 trains run from Shenyang North to Changbaishan West, the fastest in 1 hour 39 minutes, second class 176–205 yuan. • From Changchun: about 10 trains to Changbaishan, the fastest in 2 hours 18 minutes and most in about 2 and a half hours, second class 132 yuan. Only one train, D549 at 07:33, goes to Changbaishan West, taking 2 hours 50 minutes.
• From Jilin city: about 10 trains to Changbaishan, the fastest in 1 hour 35 minutes, second class 98 yuan.
• From Harbin: two direct trains. D548 leaves Harbin West at 06:20 and takes 3 hours 31 minutes; D552 leaves Harbin Station at 15:30 (4 hours 8 minutes) and calls at Harbin West at 15:48 (3 hours 50 minutes); second class costs 221–228 yuan depending on where you board. That makes Changbai Mountain an easy add-on to a Harbin winter trip.

Book on the official China Railway 12306 site or app with your passport; our guide on how to book train tickets walks through it, and the high-speed train guide explains train types and seats. Trains to the mountain are few compared with big-city lines, so book as soon as your dates are fixed, especially in summer and around Chinese holidays.

From Changbaishan Station to the north area. City buses 1 and 3 run from the station's transport hub to the Chibei Transport Hub from 07:00 to 18:20 for 2 yuan, and bus 2 is a loop from the station for 1 yuan, running 06:20–18:08; routes may change in bad weather or emergencies. The Chibei Transport Hub is one of the north area's check-in points. From there the park's shuttle line (池北旅游班线, the Chibei line in your ticket set) takes you toward the gate. Departure times are posted at the hub, and your hotel can confirm them. A taxi covers the same short distance if you arrive with luggage.

From Changbaishan West to the west area. Changbaishan West station is in Songjianghe (松江河) town, Fusong county, the west-side base; older guides call it Songjianghe station. Most people take a taxi or a hotel pickup from Changbaishan West to the west area; arrange it when you book your hotel.

By air. Changbaishan Airport (长白山机场, code NBS) has a small and seasonal route list. For the 2026–27 winter season, Spring Airlines flies daily from Shanghai Pudong, leaving at 19:00 and landing at 21:35, from 25 October 2026. Other routes come and go with the seasons, so check a flight search app for your dates. Ask your hotel how far the airport is from your base and arrange a transfer before you fly, especially for a late-night arrival. Yanji's airport is the other gateway, especially from Korea; the train from Yanji West is covered below.

Moving between areas. There are intercity shuttle buses between the three areas, or you can hire a car with driver; the park's information line for the shuttle is +86 433 531 0466. With 100 km between the north and west hubs, do not plan both areas on the same day.

Visiting the North Area

A north-area day follows the park's buses. You check in at your booked time, take the shuttle line to the gate, then the eco-bus between the sights inside, and the separate summit vehicle up the last stretch to the Tianchi viewpoint. Our suggested order: go up to Tianchi first if it is open that morning, because that is the part most likely to close if the weather turns. Then come down to the waterfall and hot springs, and finish with Lvyuan Pool, Xiaotianchi and the Underground Forest, which are lower and less exposed. Give it the whole day; the official estimate is 6–8 hours.

Tianchi. The lake fills the volcano's crater. It is about 4,400 metres from north to south and 3,370 metres from east to west, up to 373 metres deep, with a surface of 9.82 square kilometres at 2,189.1 metres above sea level; it is the source of the Songhua River and a boundary lake between China and North Korea. You look down on it from the viewing area on the rim; you do not walk down to the water. Stay inside the marked paths and platforms.

Changbai Waterfall and the hot springs. The waterfall drops 68 metres, with the water coming out of Tianchi; nearby, the Julong hot springs reach up to 83 °C, and the classic snack is an egg boiled in the spring water. The springs are fenced for good reason; buy your egg from the stalls and keep your hands out of the vents. The walk to the waterfall viewpoint is paved and not hard, but it can be icy in the cold months, so wear shoes with grip.

Lvyuan Pool and Xiaotianchi. Two small, quiet stops on the way down: a green pool below a small cascade and a small round lake in the forest. Fifteen to thirty minutes each is enough.

The Underground Forest. This is the lowest sight in the north area. Its entrance is about 14 km from the new north gate. The ground here sank during volcanic eruptions and left a forest growing at the bottom of a canyon with walls about 70 metres high; from the entrance a boardwalk runs about 1,000 metres, then 350 metres to the left to Dongtian Waterfall, or 500 metres to the right to the forest floor. It is the best fallback when cloud hides the summit, because it sits well below the weather at the top.

The West and South Areas

West area. Where the north area drives you nearly to the viewpoint, the west area makes you climb. To see Tianchi from the west you walk up 1,442 steps, about 900 metres in total; older visitors or people with heart problems can be carried up in a sedan chair (滑竿, huágān); and the view from the top looks down across the wide, oval lake. The stairs start high up the mountain, so even fit people feel the thin air and the wind. Go slowly and take breaks at the landings. In winter the summit trip runs by snowmobile instead.

The other main sight is the Jinjiang Canyon (锦江大峡谷, also called the Changbai Grand Canyon), about 20 km from Tianchi; it was formed by volcanic deposits that later cracked and were cut by water, and the visitor route follows one stretch of the North Jinjiang river. A boardwalk loop runs along the edge, with rock pillars and forest below.

The west area also has an alpine garden (高山花园), a seasonal sight that opens in July; check the park's announcements for the dates.

Choose the west area over the north if you want the climb and the open view, if you are already staying on the west side, or if you are adding a second day after the north area.

South area. In summer 2026 the open sights were Tianchi, the Yuehua twin waterfalls (岳桦双瀑) and a site with carbonised wood left by an ancient eruption, while the Yalu River Grand Canyon was closed for repairs. That canyon is normally the way up to the south view of Tianchi; it is 10 km long, 200 metres wide and 170 metres deep. The south area closed for the winter on 16 October 2026 and its reopening date will be announced later; in most years it opens around mid-May. It is about 170 km from the north visitor hub, so it suits travellers on a second visit or with a private driver.

Winter and Skiing

Changbai Mountain does not shut for winter. The north and west areas are open all year and only the south area closes. Last winter, check-in in the north area closed at 13:30 and its sights closed at 16:30; in the west, check-in closed at 13:00, the Jinjiang Canyon closed at 15:30 and the Powder Snow Valley (粉雪谷) play area at 16:00. Those were the 2025–26 hours, so confirm this season's times in the park's announcements. Days are short and check-in ends early, so start in the morning.

In winter you get the waterfall half-frozen in a gorge full of snow, steam rising off the hot spring streams, snowy forest along the bus road, and the snowmobile ride to the west summit. The downsides are very cold wind at the top, a higher risk of wind and snow closures at Tianchi, and shorter opening hours. If you come in winter, plan for at least one spare day and treat a view of the lake as a bonus.

Skiing. The ski resorts are on the west side of the mountain, the best known being the Changbaishan International Resort (长白山国际度假区). Check the resort's own site for its runs, hotels and the 2026–27 season opening before you build a trip around it. Dressing for it. Treat it as serious cold. Wear a thermal base layer, a fleece or down mid layer, a windproof outer jacket, insulated waterproof boots with a good grip, a hat that covers your ears, a neck warmer and two pairs of gloves (thin ones for your phone, thick ones over them). Coming from Yanji

Yanji is the capital of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture (延边朝鲜族自治州), set up on 3 September 1952; ethnic Koreans make up 35.8% of its population, and you will see Korean on signs and menus across the region. Yanji Chaoyangchuan International Airport has been a port of entry since 2005 and first opened charter flights to Seoul in 2000, which is why many Korean visitors start here. Flight schedules to Korea change by season, so check the airlines for your dates.

By train, about 3 trains are scheduled from Yanji West to Changbaishan on the sample day, leaving 08:01–16:33; the fastest takes 1 hour 38 minutes and second class costs 85 yuan; 3 trains run back, leaving Changbaishan 11:57–18:44. By road the north-side town is 210 km from Yanji. The 240-hour visa-free transit rule above applies here too: Yanji is in Jilin province.

Where to Stay

For the north area, stay in Erdaobaihe (二道白河). The old town of Erdaobaihe is now Chibei district (池北区), the seat of the mountain's administration. It has the widest choice of hotels and restaurants, Changbaishan Station, and the Chibei Transport Hub where north-area visits start. This is the easiest base for a first trip.

For the west area, stay in Songjianghe (松江河). This town on the west side has Changbaishan West station; pick a hotel there, near the west area's transport hubs, or in the resort area if you are skiing. Staying here saves you the 100 km drive from the north side on the morning of your west visit. If you want both areas, split your stay: a night or two in Erdaobaihe, then move west.

In short: book the north area for your first visit and allow two days, or three with the west area or a weather backup. Book timed tickets on the official WeChat channels up to 7 days ahead, take the train to Changbaishan Station (north) or Changbaishan West (west), stay in Erdaobaihe for the north side or Songjianghe for the west, and dress for wind and cold even in summer.
