Northeast China Route: Harbin, Changbai Mountain, Shenyang and Dalian by Train

A Northeast China route from Harbin to Changbai Mountain, Shenyang and Dalian takes 7 to 10 days, and the easiest order is north to south: Harbin → Changbai Mountain → Shenyang → Dalian, flying into Harbin and out of Dalian (or the reverse). Every leg now has a direct train. A morning D train runs from Harbin West to Changbaishan Station in about 3.5 hours. Changbaishan to Shenyang North is about 2 hours on the new high-speed line, and Shenyang to Dalian North takes about 1.5 hours. Go in winter (mid-December to February) for ice festivals and snow, or in summer (late June to early September) for cool mountain air and the coast. One rule shapes the plan before anything else: if you enter China on the 240-hour visa-free transit, you can visit Harbin and anywhere in Liaoning province (Shenyang, Dalian), but not Changbai Mountain, because Jilin province is outside the scheme.

The Short Answer: How Many Days and Which Order

Northeast China (东北, Dōngběi) is three provinces stacked from north to south: Heilongjiang (Harbin), Jilin (Changbai Mountain, Changchun, Jilin city, Yanji) and Liaoning (Shenyang, Dalian, Dandong). The route follows that line south, with one loop east into the mountains. You never need to backtrack.

How many days

• 7 days covers all four stops: 2 days in Harbin, 2 at Changbai Mountain, 1 in Shenyang and 2 in Dalian. It works, but you have no spare day if the mountain weather closes the crater lake.
• 8 to 10 days is the comfortable version. Use the extra days for a buffer day at Changbai Mountain, a second day in Shenyang for the imperial tombs, or a day trip from Dalian to Lushun.
• 5 days is enough only if you drop Changbai Mountain and ride straight from Harbin to Shenyang and Dalian. This is also the version that fits the 240-hour visa-free transit.

Which direction

We recommend north to south: fly into Harbin, fly out of Dalian. In winter you see the coldest, most snow-dependent sights first, while the ice is at its best, and finish somewhere milder with seafood. In summer you end the trip at the beach. Dalian also has frequent flights to Seoul and Tokyo, which makes it an easy place to leave from. The reverse (Dalian in, Harbin out) works just as well if your flights are cheaper that way. High-speed trains from Beijing Chaoyang reach Harbin West in as little as about 4.5 hours, Shenyang in as little as about 2.5 hours and Dalian North in as little as about 3.5 hours. Winter route or summer route

These are two different trips on the same rails.

• Winter (mid-December to February) is the season most people come for: Harbin's ice and snow parks, a white Changbai Mountain with skiing and outdoor hot springs, and a frozen Songhua River. It is very cold. In Harbin the January average high is −12.0°C and the average low −22.9°C. Harbin's Ice and Snow World usually opens in mid to late December, so a trip before then misses it.
• Summer (late June to early September) is the escape from the heat of southern China. Harbin's July average high is 27.8°C, Dalian's August average is about 24°C, and the mountain is green and open on all three sides. The catch is rain: July and August are the rainy season across the Northeast.

If you can pick only one, choose winter for the spectacle and summer for comfort. Spring and autumn are short up here. They are fine for Shenyang and Dalian, but the ice parks are closed and the mountain can be snowy and partly shut.

Entry and Exit: Visa-Free Transit and Which Airports to Use

How you enter China decides whether Changbai Mountain can be on your route at all.

If you have a Chinese visa, or you qualify for the 30-day visa-free entry that China offers some nationalities, none of the limits below apply. You can go anywhere on this route, including Changbai Mountain and the rest of Jilin. For most eligible countries the 30-day scheme currently runs to 31 December 2026, so for a January–February trip check that it has been extended before you book. If you plan to use the 240-hour visa-free transit, the permitted area matters more than anything else on this page. Under the scheme you may stay in 24 provinces and travel between them. For this route that means:

• Liaoning: the whole province, so Shenyang, Dalian, Lushun and Dandong are all fine. The three Liaoning entry ports are Shenyang Taoxian International Airport, Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport and Dalian Seaport.
• Heilongjiang: Harbin only. The one Heilongjiang entry port is Harbin Taiping International Airport.
• Jilin: not included. On 240-hour transit you cannot go to Changbai Mountain, Yanji, Changchun or Jilin city.

What this means in practice: an open-jaw trip on 240-hour transit, flying into Harbin and out of Dalian, becomes Harbin + Shenyang + Dalian, linked by the direct Harbin–Shenyang and Harbin–Dalian trains. That is the 5-day version below. You also need a confirmed onward ticket, booked before you arrive, to a third country or region, and that destination must be different from the place you flew in from. Flights in and out

Dalian has frequent flights to Japan and Korea. For the 2026–27 winter schedule, Dalian Zhoushuizi lists about 35 flights a week to Seoul, 17 to Tokyo, 7 to Kuala Lumpur and 3 to Osaka. Shenyang Taoxian has international routes to 7 cities this winter, including Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore and Frankfurt. Harbin's international routes include Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore and several Russian cities. For most travellers from Europe or North America, the practical plan is to connect through Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul or Tokyo into Harbin and out of Dalian. Airline schedules change by season, so check the current timetable when you book.

The Rail Legs: How to Get from Stop to Stop

Everything below comes from China Railway's 12306 booking system for one sample travel day, 5 November 2026. Train counts and times are what is scheduled that day, not a fixed timetable, and fares vary by train. The table shows every leg side by side; the notes after it explain what matters for each one.

Harbin to Changbai Mountain (the leg to plan first)

This used to be the hard part of the route. Now there are direct trains, but only two a day. D548 leaves Harbin West at 06:20 and takes 3 hours 31 minutes; D552 leaves Harbin Station at 15:30 and Harbin West at 15:48, taking about 3 hours 50 minutes from Harbin West; second class costs 221–228 yuan depending on where you board. With only two trains, seats on peak days go first, so book this leg before the others.

If both are full, go via Shenyang. Harbin West to Shenyang North has about 33 high-speed trains on the sample day, the fastest about 2 hours. From Shenyang North about 10 trains continue to Changbaishan, most taking about 2 hours. That is a longer day, but with many more trains to choose from. You can also go via Changchun, which has about 10 trains a day to Changbaishan taking about 2.5 hours, second class 132 yuan. Harbin–Changchun trains are frequent; check 12306 for times on your date.

Make sure you book to the right station. Changbaishan Station (长白山站) is on the north side of the mountain, about 9 km from the North Area visitor centre, near the town of Erdaobaihe (二道白河), now called Chibei district (池北区). Changbaishan West (长白山西) serves the West Area. From Shenyang North about 5 trains a day run to Changbaishan West, the fastest in 1 hour 39 minutes. The two areas are about 100 km apart by road, so pick the station for the side you will visit first. City buses 1 and 3 run from Changbaishan Station to the Chibei transport hub for 2 yuan, roughly 07:00 to 18:20.

Changbai Mountain to Shenyang

The Shenyang–Baihe high-speed line opened on 28 September 2025 and turned this from a half-day trip into a short ride. Shenyang North to Changbaishan has about 10 trains on the sample day, the fastest 1 hour 53 minutes, with second class from 196 to 275 yuan. In the other direction, about 10 trains leave Changbaishan for Shenyang North between 07:27 and 20:16, with a few more to Shenyang Station. The late departures mean you can spend a full day on the mountain and still reach Shenyang that night. To continue to Dalian, plan to change in Shenyang, and check 12306 in case a through train runs on your date.

Shenyang to Dalian

This is the easy leg. About 43 trains run from Shenyang's stations to Dalian North on the sample day, the fastest 1 hour 25 minutes, second class 146–190 yuan. Most of them leave from Shenyang Station (沈阳站), not Shenyang North. Trains from Changbai Mountain arrive at Shenyang North, so if you go straight on to Dalian, either book one of the trains from Shenyang North or allow time to cross the city. High-speed trains from Harbin and Beijing all arrive at Dalian North (大连北), and so do most trains from Shenyang; a few go to the older Dalian Station in the city centre, so check the station on your ticket.

Direct trains if you skip the mountain

• Harbin West → Shenyang North: about 33 trains, fastest 2 hours 1 minute, second class 235–279 yuan.
• Harbin → Dalian North: about 17 direct high-speed trains, fastest 3 hours 33 minutes, second class 386–459 yuan, plus an overnight slow train taking about 13 hours.
• Changchun West → Shenyang North: about 41 trains, fastest 1 hour 3 minutes, second class 139–148 yuan, useful if you add Changchun.
• Dalian → Dandong (optional extension): about 9 direct trains, the fastest 1 hour 56 minutes, second class 98–114.5 yuan. Dandong is the border city on the Yalu River.

Booking the trains

Tickets go on sale 15 days ahead, counting the day of travel. You can book with a foreign passport on the 12306 website or app, and at the station you enter through the staffed lane, because passports cannot be read by the automatic gates. How Long to Stay at Each Stop

Each city has its own guide. This section tells you how much time each one needs on this route and what to plan around.

Harbin: 2 to 3 days

Harbin is the main winter stop. Ice and Snow World is a park of lit ice buildings and slides; the 2026–27 edition was announced on 12 October 2026, and the opening date and ticket price are not out yet. Recent seasons opened on 21 December 2024 and 17 December 2025. The Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival has opened on 5 January in each recent year. Add a day for Central Street, the pedestrian street of early-1900s European-style buildings, which is free to walk, plus St. Sophia Cathedral and the frozen river. Optional winter stop: Jilin city for the rime ice

Jilin city, between Harbin and the mountain, is known for rime ice: frost that coats the trees along the Songhua River on cold, clear mornings. The best season is late December to the end of February, and it is best seen early in the morning before it melts or blows off. The main viewing villages on Rime Island are about 40 km from the city. From Jilin, about 10 trains a day reach Changbaishan, the fastest in 1 hour 35 minutes, so it slots in as one night between Harbin and the mountain. To get to Jilin from Harbin, trains run via Changchun; check 12306 for times on your date. Jilin city is in Jilin province, so like Changbai Mountain it is off-limits on 240-hour transit.

Changbai Mountain: 2 to 3 days

Changbai Mountain (长白山, Chángbái Shān) is a volcano on China's border with North Korea; Korean visitors know it as Baekdu-san (백두산). Its crater lake, Tianchi (天池, "Heaven Lake"), is the main sight. The North and West areas are open all year, while the South Area closes for the winter; this season it closed from 16 October 2026. Whether the Tianchi viewpoint opens is decided each day by the weather and road conditions, which is why a third day helps: if the lake is closed on your first day, you can try again. Tickets are booked online in timed slots under your real name, up to 7 days ahead, through the official Changbaishan WeChat account and mini-programs, and a passport is accepted at the gate. Each area is booked separately and a ticket is valid only on its day. Most visitors stay in Erdaobaihe (Chibei district) near Changbaishan Station. Shenyang: 1 to 2 days

Shenyang is more than a place to change trains. Mukden Palace (沈阳故宫), the early Qing dynasty palace, was added to the World Heritage list in 2004 together with the Zhaoling and Fuling imperial tombs. Zhaoling sits inside Beiling Park on the north side of the city, while Fuling is on the eastern outskirts, about 18 km from the centre. One day covers the palace and Zhaoling; a second day adds Fuling and the modern-history museums. The palace needs a real-name booking, which you can make with a passport, and it closes on Mondays except on public holidays, so do not plan your Shenyang day for a Monday. Dalian and Lushun: 2 to 3 days

Dalian is the coastal end of the route: seaside roads, big squares, beaches in summer and seafood all year. Two days covers the city and the coast. A third day goes to Lushun (旅顺), the district at the tip of the peninsula with the Russo-Japanese War sites, the Lushun Museum and the old prison. Lushun has been fully open to foreign visitors since 2009, and Metro Line 12 runs there from Hekou station, where it meets Line 1. Lushun is still home to a naval port, and photographing military areas is prohibited by law, so follow the signs. Sample Itineraries: 8-Day Winter, 7-Day Summer, 5-Day Short Version

The train times below are from the 5 November 2026 sample day. Check 12306 for your own date before you book; the pattern of trains usually stays similar, but exact times can change.

8 days in winter (mid-December to February)

• Day 1 – Harbin. Arrive, walk Central Street and see St. Sophia Cathedral. Eat early and sleep; the cold is tiring at first.
• Day 2 – Harbin. Sun Island snow sculptures by day, then Ice and Snow World from late afternoon so you see it in daylight and lit up. Check the opening date and ticket price on the park's official channels once they are announced.
• Day 3 – Harbin to Changbai Mountain. A slow morning, then D552 from Harbin West at 15:48, arriving in the evening (about 3 hours 50 minutes). If you prefer to arrive early, take D548 at 06:20 instead and have the afternoon in Erdaobaihe.
• Day 4 – Changbai Mountain, North Area. Tianchi if it opens, the waterfall and the hot springs. Book your timed ticket in advance.
• Day 5 – Changbai Mountain, then Shenyang. A buffer morning: a second try at Tianchi, the West Area or a ski day. In the evening, take a train to Shenyang North; the last departure on the sample day is 20:16.
• Day 6 – Shenyang. Mukden Palace in the morning (winter hours are 09:00–16:30, last entry 15:45), then Beiling Park and Zhaoling.
• Day 7 – Shenyang to Dalian. Morning train from Shenyang Station to Dalian North, about 1.5 hours. Afternoon on the coast road and Xinghai Square (星海广场); seafood dinner.
• Day 8 – Lushun and fly out. Metro Line 12 to Lushun for the morning, back to the city and out from Dalian Zhoushuizi. Line 12 stops running earlier than the city lines, so head back by early evening if you stay longer. Ticket machines take foreign cards, but the gates only take QR codes, so buy a ticket or set up a QR code first. For a relaxed Lushun day, add a ninth day.

7 days in summer (late June to early September)

• Day 1 – Harbin. Central Street, the riverside and Sun Island Park in the evening.
• Day 2 – Harbin to Changbai Mountain. D548 at 06:20 from Harbin West, arriving before 10:00 (3 hours 31 minutes). Rest in the afternoon, or try a hot-spring hotel in Erdaobaihe; keep the mountain itself for a full day, since a ticket is valid only on its date.
• Day 3 – North Area. Tianchi, the waterfall and the hot springs. In summer the North Area's ticket check runs 07:00–14:30, so start early; a full visit takes 6 to 8 hours in peak season.
• Day 4 – A second area, then Shenyang. The South Area reopens each year around mid-May, so in summer all three areas are open. If you spend the day in the West Area, look for an evening train from Changbaishan West, which is on that side of the mountain; check 12306 for times from there. From Changbaishan Station, Shenyang North is about 2 hours away.
• Day 5 – Shenyang. Mukden Palace, Zhaoling in Beiling Park and an evening on Zhongjie, the old shopping street.
• Day 6 – Shenyang to Dalian. Early train to Dalian North, then the coast and a beach afternoon.
• Day 7 – Dalian. Lushun, or Jinshitan (金石滩, the Golden Pebble Beach resort area at the end of Metro Line 3), then fly out.

In summer, a 9- or 10-day version gives the extra days to the coast: one full day each for Lushun, Jinshitan and Dalian city.

5 days: Harbin, Shenyang and Dalian (works on 240-hour transit)

• Days 1–2 – Harbin. The old town and, in winter, the ice and snow parks.
• Day 3 – Harbin to Shenyang. Harbin West to Shenyang North in about 2 hours. Afternoon at Mukden Palace or the Liaoning Provincial Museum.
• Day 4 – Shenyang to Dalian. Morning train to Dalian North; afternoon on the coast.
• Day 5 – Lushun or the coast, then fly out.

Every stop here is inside the 240-hour permitted area (Harbin plus Liaoning). If you would rather skip Shenyang, the direct Harbin–Dalian train takes from about 3.5 hours and gives Dalian a third day. If you have a visa or 30-day visa-free entry and want the mountain in 5 days, fly into Shenyang, do Shenyang–Changbai Mountain–Shenyang (2 nights at the mountain) and finish in Dalian.

Seasons and Practical Matters

Winter cold, and the heating

Each stop gets colder as you go north and up. Dalian is the mildest: January averages −4.5 to −6°C in the south of the city. Shenyang's January average high is −5.2°C and low −16.6°C. Harbin is colder again: in December 2025 a cold-wave warning forecast night lows of −26 to −31°C in most of the city, and down to −36°C in the north and east. On Changbai Mountain, the weather station near the crater rim averages −7.3°C over the whole year, and fog and strong wind are normal.

Indoors is the opposite. Harbin's heating rules require at least 18°C in living rooms and bedrooms through the heating season, and trains, malls and hotels are often warmer than that. Dress in layers you can take off: a thermal base, a fleece and a long down coat, plus boots with grip for icy pavements, a hat, a face covering and thin gloves under thick ones. Keep your phone and power bank in an inside pocket, because cold drains batteries fast. Summer rain and the beach season

Summer is warm, not hot, but it is also when most of the year's rain falls. Late July to early August is the heaviest period in northern China, with short downpours and thunderstorms. Rain can close the Tianchi viewpoint just as snow does, so the spare mountain day is useful in summer too. Dalian's beaches are busiest in July and August. On the 2026 readings, sea temperatures at the main beaches were about 25–26°C on 13 August and about 21–22°C on 1 October. For a quieter coast with water still warm enough to swim, late August to early September is a good compromise.

Peak travel dates to avoid or book early

• New Year (1 January): usually a three-day break, busy at the ice parks. In 2027, 1 January falls on a Friday; the exact days off have not been published yet.
• Chinese New Year and the Spring Festival travel rush: the hardest time to get train seats in China. In 2026 the rush ran from 2 February to 13 March, 40 days. The last two rushes each lasted 40 days and began about two weeks before Lunar New Year; the dates are announced each year, so check the 2027 dates once they are published. • School winter holidays (around January and February): families travel to Harbin and the ski resorts, so hotel prices rise. Book Harbin and Erdaobaihe rooms early.
• July–August and the October holiday week: busy at Changbai Mountain and on the Dalian coast. See our Golden Week guide for the October week.

Luggage and changing trains

This route has four or five train rides with a hotel change at each stop, so travel light: one suitcase you can lift onto a luggage rack, plus a day bag. In winter you are wearing your bulkiest clothes, which helps. Give yourself at least 45 minutes to get through a big station like Harbin West or Shenyang North, because passport holders use the staffed gate and every station has a security check. Do not plan a same-station change of less than an hour on the mountain leg; with only two direct Harbin trains a day, a missed connection costs you a day.

For hotels, stay near the station you leave from when you have an early train. In Harbin that means near Harbin West for D548, or near Central Street if you take the afternoon train. What to book, in what order

1. Decide your season and check your entry status: on 240-hour transit, the route is Harbin plus Liaoning only.
2. Book flights into Harbin and out of Dalian (or the reverse).
3. Book the Harbin–Changbaishan train as soon as the 15-day sale opens, then the other legs.
4. Book Changbai Mountain tickets up to 7 days ahead, and the Mukden Palace booking a few days ahead.
5. Book hotels with free cancellation, especially at the mountain.
