Central China Route: Wuhan, Changsha, Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang in 8–10 Days

Plan 8 to 10 days for this route, and travel it in this order: Wuhan (武汉), then Changsha (长沙), then Zhangjiajie (张家界), then Fenghuang (凤凰). From Fenghuang you leave by train, either back to Changsha South for a flight or onward through Huaihua South (怀化南) into Guizhou. Every leg is a high-speed train of roughly two hours or less, as long as you use the right station in each city. A traveller on the 240-hour visa-free transit can do the whole loop, because Hubei and Hunan are both permitted areas in full and you may cross between permitted provinces.

The route gives you two big river cities with strong museums and food, then two or three days among the sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie, then a slow finish in an old riverside town. How many days, and why this order

Nine days is the version we recommend for a first visit: two days in Wuhan, a day and a half in Changsha, three days in Zhangjiajie and one night in Fenghuang. With eight days you give Changsha a single day. With ten you add a second night in Fenghuang or a spare day in Zhangjiajie for bad weather. Fewer than seven days is too tight for all four stops, so drop one (see "How to adjust the route" below).

The order follows the railway map. Wuhan sits on the main north–south high-speed line, so it is easy to reach from Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou. Changsha is one stop further south on the same line. Zhangjiajie is a branch to the west of Changsha, and Fenghuang is on the line that runs south from Zhangjiajie to Huaihua. Going Wuhan → Changsha → Zhangjiajie → Fenghuang means you never backtrack until the very last leg.

The timetable also favours Zhangjiajie before Fenghuang. On the 5 November 2026 sample day on 12306, trains from Zhangjiajie West to Fenghuang start at 07:05, but trains in the other direction do not start until 12:43. Leaving Fenghuang is easy in the morning: the first train to Changsha South is at 07:44. If you did it the other way round, you would lose half a day on two separate legs.

When to go

• Best: April to early May, and late September to November. Wuhan averages about 18 °C in both April and October, and Changsha is similar.
• Summer (June to August): very hot and humid in the two cities. Wuhan's July highs are usually 37–39 °C, and Changsha can reach 39–40 °C after its rainy season ends. The Zhangjiajie mountains are 5–10 °C cooler than the town below, which helps, but they are also often misty.
• Rain: Changsha has long spells of drizzle from late March to mid-May, and heavier rain from late May. In the Fenghuang area, May to July are the wettest months, and river boats can stop after storms (more in the Fenghuang Ancient Town guide).
• Winter (December to February): cold and damp in the cities, and snow on the Zhangjiajie peaks, so bring shoes with grip. Crowds are much smaller.

Avoid China's national holidays if you can, especially the first week of October. The Zhangjiajie park limits daily entries and uses timed entry slots, and holiday days reach the limit.

The train legs: stations, times and fares

All train data below comes from 12306, the official China Railway booking system. Counts and times are from one sample travel day, 5 November 2026, except the Changsha–Zhangjiajie leg, which uses 29 October 2026. Fares are second-class seats and vary by train. Timetables change a little each season, so treat the numbers as "about" and check the live schedule when you book.

Leg 1: Wuhan → Changsha South (about 1.5 hours)

Leave from Wuhan Station (武汉站), not Wuchang. About 110 high-speed trains run from Wuhan Station to Changsha South that day, from 06:45 to 22:13; the fastest takes 1 h 11 min and most take about 1 h 32 min, at 145–199 yuan in second class. Hankou Station has only about 12 trains to Changsha South, and Wuchang Station has no high-speed trains to Changsha South at all, only slow trains of 3 hours or more to Changsha Station. Because trains are so frequent, you can book this leg a day or two before.

Leg 2: Changsha → Zhangjiajie West (about 2 hours)

This is the leg where the station matters most. Leave from Changsha Station (长沙站), not Changsha South. On the 29 October 2026 timetable, Changsha Station has about 31 trains to Zhangjiajie West, with high-speed departures from 07:04 to 21:10, the fastest taking 1 h 45 min and most about 2 hours. Changsha South has only about 10 trains, and they take 2 h 52 min or longer. Changsha Station is also cheaper: 135–166 yuan in second class, against 242–301 yuan from Changsha South.

You arrive in Changsha at Changsha South, so you need to cross town. Metro Line 2 runs east–west and links Changsha South and Changsha Station. Allow plenty of time for the metro ride and for security at the station. The Changsha guide covers the two stations in more detail.

Leg 3: Zhangjiajie West → Fenghuang Gucheng (about 1 hour)

Fenghuang has its own high-speed station, Fenghuang Gucheng (凤凰古城站, "Fenghuang Ancient Town" station). It is on the Zhangjiajie–Jishou–Huaihua line, which opened on 6 December 2021. Older guides that tell you to take a 4-hour bus from Zhangjiajie are out of date.

About 18 trains run from Zhangjiajie West to Fenghuang Gucheng on the sample day, from 07:05 to 19:20; the fastest takes 51 minutes and most about an hour, at 77–93 yuan in second class. In the other direction there are about 11 trains, and none before 12:43.

The station is about 10 km from the old town. A sightseeing maglev line opened in July 2022 and links the station side with a stop above the Tuo River (沱江), from where you can walk down into town. Check the maglev fare and times at the station; a taxi is the simple alternative.

Leg 4: out of Fenghuang (to Changsha South or Huaihua South)

You have two ways out, and both are easy in the morning.

• Back to Changsha South (for a flight from Changsha, or a train to Guangzhou, Shanghai or Beijing): about 13 trains, from 07:44 to 20:27; the fastest takes 1 h 52 min and most about 2 h 19 min, at 188–221 yuan in second class.
• South to Huaihua South (for Guizhou): about 21 trains, from 07:44 to 20:27, in about 25 minutes, at 35–42 yuan. From Huaihua South about 32 high-speed trains go to Guiyang North, from 10:16 to 21:37, the fastest in 1 h 28 min, at 165–185 yuan.

Guilin is not an easy exit from here. Huaihua South has only one direct train to Guilin North on the sample day, at 08:52, and it takes 5 h 21 min. If Guilin is your next stop, look at connections through Changsha South on 12306 before you commit, and see the Guilin and Yangshuo guide.

How to book

Tickets go on sale 15 days ahead, counting the travel day. Book the Changsha → Zhangjiajie leg and the Fenghuang leg as soon as you know your dates, because those lines have far fewer trains than Wuhan → Changsha.

Where to fly in and out

The three airports on the route

• Wuhan Tianhe (武汉天河): about 18 international and regional destinations as of April 2026. Metro Line 2 runs from the airport to Hankou Station in about 35 minutes; the Wuhan guide covers the airport and the city's three railway stations.
• Changsha Huanghua (长沙黄花): in the 2026 summer season it had international and regional routes to 11 cities, including London, Nairobi and Bangkok; for the 2026/27 winter season, local media report 13 international and regional points, including Seoul, London and Singapore, so check the current schedule with airlines. A maglev line links the airport with Changsha South Station, running from 07:00 to 22:30 (23:00 on weekends and holidays). That makes Changsha the easiest airport to fly home from after Fenghuang.
• Zhangjiajie Hehua (张家界荷花): in the 2026 summer–autumn season, mostly domestic routes (Shanghai and Xi'an about 4 flights a day, Beijing and Chengdu about 2), plus daily flights to several Korean cities, including Seoul Incheon and Busan, and routes to Southeast Asia.

Wuhan has no scheduled flights to Japan at the moment, Japan is not on Changsha's published route lists, and Zhangjiajie's international routes are mainly to Korea and Southeast Asia. From Japan, fly into Shanghai or another hub and take the train; check with airlines before you book, as routes change each season.

Arriving by train from a big city

Many people do this route after Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou. Each is a direct high-speed train to Wuhan Station or Hankou:

• Beijing West → Wuhan Station: about 31 trains, fastest 3 h 48 min, 467–623 yuan in second class.
• Shanghai Hongqiao → Hankou or Wuhan Station: about 23 trains to Hankou and 11 to Wuhan Station, fastest 3 h 32 min, 320–431 yuan. The last one leaves Hongqiao at 17:52.
• Guangzhou South → Wuhan Station: about 59 trains, fastest 3 h 17 min, 470–553 yuan.

Open-jaw: the plan we recommend

Book an open-jaw trip: arrive in one city and leave from another. The simplest version is in at Wuhan, out at Changsha. You land in Wuhan (or arrive by train from Beijing or Shanghai), finish in Fenghuang, take the morning train back to Changsha South, and ride the maglev to the airport. If your international flight leaves from Guangzhou or Shanghai instead, take the train from Changsha South to those cities after Fenghuang.

Other combinations work too. If you fly into Zhangjiajie (for example from Korea), go Zhangjiajie → Fenghuang → Changsha South → Wuhan: Zhangjiajie West → Fenghuang and Fenghuang → Changsha South both have trains from early morning, and Changsha South → Wuhan is on the busy main north–south line. Travellers heading on to southwest China can leave by train through Huaihua South and fly out of Guiyang.

The 240-hour visa-free transit on this route

The 240-hour visa-free transit lets citizens of eligible countries stay up to 10 days without a visa when they are travelling on to a third country or region, with a confirmed onward ticket booked before arrival. On this route the entry ports are Wuhan Tianhe in Hubei, and Changsha Huanghua and Zhangjiajie Hehua in Hunan. Hubei and Hunan both count in full, and you may travel between permitted provinces. Guizhou also counts in full, so a Huaihua South → Guiyang exit stays inside the rules.

The 240 hours start at midnight after the day you arrive, which is enough for the 9-day plan below with a little room to spare. China's 30-day visa-free entry for ordinary passports of eligible countries works at any port open to foreigners and has no area limit, but for most of those countries it currently runs until 31 December 2026, so check the latest end date. Day-by-day plan (9 days)

This plan assumes you arrive in Wuhan on the morning of Day 1 and fly out of Changsha on the evening of Day 9 or the next morning. Each city page has the full details; here you get the order, the one thing not to miss at each stop, and the bookings to make in advance.

Day 1: Wuhan — Yellow Crane Tower and the river

Check in, then go to the Yellow Crane Tower (黄鹤楼, Huánghè Lóu) on Snake Hill in Wuchang district (the district, not the station). The five-storey tower is 51.4 m tall, and from the top you look over the Yangtze and all three parts of Wuhan. Tickets are 70 yuan, under a 2018 price document the park still posts; check the price when you book. Ticket sales stop at 17:00 and last entry is 17:20. Bring your passport. The free and half-price rules for seniors are written for Chinese ID cards, so plan on paying full price.

In the evening walk down to the riverside, or cross to Hankou for Jianghan Road (江汉路) and its early 20th-century buildings. For where to stay, eat breakfast and ride the Yangtze ferry, see the Wuhan guide.

Day 2: Wuhan — Hubei Provincial Museum and East Lake

The Hubei Provincial Museum (湖北省博物馆) holds the bronze bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng and is the best reason to stop in Wuhan. Entry is free, but everyone must book a named ticket in advance: up to 5 days ahead, with new days released at 00:00, and you must arrive in your chosen time slot out of four each day. Foreign passports can book. On the day, staff scan your booking QR code with a handheld device rather than at the ID-card gates, so bring the passport you booked with. Book on the museum's official site or its WeChat account. Set a reminder for midnight five days before your visit.

East Lake (东湖) is next to the museum; spend the afternoon walking or cycling part of its shore. Go to bed early, because you leave tomorrow morning.

Day 3: train to Changsha — Hunan Museum

Take a morning train from Wuhan Station to Changsha South (Leg 1). Drop your bags and go to the Hunan Museum (湖南博物院), home of the Mawangdui (马王堆) Han tombs, including the preserved body of a Han-dynasty noblewoman. Entry is free, with a timed booking up to 5 days ahead (not counting today); each new day opens at 20:00, and you can book and enter with a passport. Book through the museum's WeChat or Alipay channels, which are linked from the Hunan Museum website.

Spend the evening on Taiping Street (太平街) and around Huangxing Road. Changsha is the place on this route for spicy Hunan food (湘菜, xiāngcài) and late nights. Try stinky tofu (臭豆腐, chòudòufu), sold black and deep-fried here.

Day 4: Changsha morning, train to Zhangjiajie

In the morning, cross the river to Yuelu Mountain (岳麓山) and Yuelu Academy (岳麓书院), one of China's old academies. Tickets are 40 yuan. Book on the academy's WeChat account up to 4 days ahead, counting today; passport holders can book and are checked by staff at the manual lane. From November to April last entry is 17:10. Orange Isle (橘子洲), the long island in the Xiang River, is close by if you have time.

After lunch, take Metro Line 2 to Changsha Station and an afternoon train to Zhangjiajie West (Leg 2). From Zhangjiajie West, the city-to-scenic-area bus or a taxi takes about 30–40 minutes to Wulingyuan (武陵源). Sleep in Wulingyuan town, near the park gate.

Days 5 and 6: Zhangjiajie — Wulingyuan

Spend two full days inside Wulingyuan, the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The ticket is 165 yuan and is valid for 4 consecutive days. The park buses that link the different areas are a separate ticket, 60 yuan for 4 days under the 2020 price; a rise to 72 yuan was proposed in 2025, so check the price when you buy. Your first entry must be booked for a time slot and a specific gate.

The 3-day Zhangjiajie itinerary gives a gate-by-gate plan for these two days (which gate to use, when to ride the Bailong Elevator, how to walk Golden Whip Stream), and the Zhangjiajie travel guide has all the ticket and transport details. If the forecast shows heavy fog or rain, swap your two park days around.

For hotels, stay in Wulingyuan town for these two nights so you can be at the gate when it opens, and move to Zhangjiajie city for the night of Day 6. Hotels register foreign guests with the police on your behalf, which is why they need your passport; check that the property accepts foreign passport holders before you pay.

Day 7: Zhangjiajie — Tianmen Mountain

Tianmen Mountain (天门山) is on the edge of Zhangjiajie city, not in the national park, and needs its own ticket. Since 6 November 2025 the upper half of the long cableway (mid-station to summit) has been closed for rebuilding, and as of the March 2026 notice no reopening date had been announced. Visits now run on three combined routes, A, B and C, which mix the lower cableway, the shuttle bus up the mountain road, the Tianmen Cave cableway and the escalators. Day 8: train to Fenghuang

Take a morning train from Zhangjiajie West to Fenghuang Gucheng (Leg 3), then go into the old town. Walking the streets is free and has been since 2016. You pay only for individual sights; under Hunan's 2025 price list, a combo ticket at 128 yuan covers eight sights plus a boat ride on the Tuo River, so check at the ticket office.

Fenghuang is best early in the morning and after dark, when the day visitors have gone and the riverside houses are lit. Stay inside the old town, ideally near the river, and read the Fenghuang Ancient Town guide for what to see, the Miao villages nearby and where to sleep.

Day 9: out of Fenghuang

Walk the riverbank once more before the crowds, then take a train back to Changsha South (Leg 4) and the maglev to the airport, or ride the train south to Huaihua South and on to Guiyang. If your flight is the next morning, sleep near Changsha South. The maglev connects it with the airport and starts at 07:00, so for a very early flight take a taxi instead.

Budget: what the fixed costs add up to

The trains and the main tickets have official prices. Hotels and meals do not, and they vary too much by season and comfort level to give honest figures. Here is what the official prices add up to for one adult.

The four train legs add up to about 545–679 yuan in second class. If you leave through Huaihua South instead of returning to Changsha, the last leg drops to 35–42 yuan.

The sightseeing tickets in the table come to about 535–547 yuan, depending on the park bus price. On top of that comes the transport part of your Tianmen route. The 2023 price list puts the main cableway at 108 yuan, the Tianmen Cave cableway at 76 yuan and the upper and lower escalators at 42 and 32 yuan, and the A, B and C packages combine these with the ticket, so check the package price when you book. Optional extras inside Wulingyuan, such as the Bailong Elevator at 65 yuan one way on the 2023 price list, are also paid separately; check the price on the day.

The free and half-price rules at these sites are mostly written for Chinese ID cards. Foreign seniors and students should plan on full price and ask at the ticket window. Hotels and food are the rest of your budget; Wulingyuan and Fenghuang guesthouses get more expensive on holidays and summer weekends, so book those nights early. How to adjust the route

Less time (6–7 days)

• Drop Fenghuang if you mostly came for Zhangjiajie. Fly out of Zhangjiajie, or take the train back to Changsha Station.
• Drop Wuhan if you arrive from the south. Guangzhou South has about 90 trains to Changsha South on the sample day, the fastest in 2 hours, so you can start in Changsha.
• Do not cut Zhangjiajie below two days. The park ticket lasts 4 days, and fog can take away a whole day.

More time (11 days or more)

• Yichang and the Three Gorges from Wuhan: Hankou Station has about 54 trains to Yichang East (fastest 1 h 34 min) and 16 to Yichang North (fastest 1 h 09 min). The two Yichang stations are in different places, so check which one is closer to your dam tour or boat.
• Shaoshan as a day trip from Changsha: about 25 trains run from Changsha South to Shaoshan South, most taking 23 minutes, at 23–36 yuan. Shaoshan is the birthplace of Mao Zedong, and his former residence is visited by advance booking on the memorial's official site or WeChat account. Confirm passport booking and opening hours with the memorial before you go. The 40-yuan ticket you may see listed is for the Dishuidong scenic area, not the former residence.
• Enshi in western Hubei is another add-on from Wuhan; check 12306 for current trains and journey times before you fit it in.
• A second Fenghuang night or a spare Zhangjiajie day are the easiest ways to slow the whole trip down.

Doing it in reverse

You can, but it is slower. Changsha South → Fenghuang has no trains before 11:26, and Fenghuang → Zhangjiajie West has none before 12:43, so two travel days lose their mornings. If you must finish in Zhangjiajie, accept the slower afternoons; if you are simply starting in Zhangjiajie, use the Zhangjiajie → Fenghuang → Changsha South → Wuhan order described above.

Joining a bigger trip

• From Beijing, Xi'an or Shanghai: all have direct trains to Wuhan. Xi'an East has about 18 trains to Hankou, the fastest in 2 h 41 min. This route works well after the Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai route.
• From Chongqing: Chongqing North has about 34 trains to Hankou, the fastest in 3 h 53 min. Chongqing East also has direct high-speed trains to Zhangjiajie West since July 2025, so you can skip Wuhan and Changsha and go straight to the mountains. See the Chongqing guide.

• On to Guilin: possible, but not direct in a practical way (see Leg 4). Check connections through Changsha South on 12306 before you commit.
