Fenghuang Ancient Town Guide: Trains, Tickets and One or Two Nights on the Tuo River

Fenghuang Ancient Town (凤凰古城, Fènghuáng Gǔchéng, "phoenix old town") is worth one night, and two if you want to add a Miao village or the Southern Great Wall outside town. It is easy to reach by high-speed train: from Zhangjiajie West the fastest train takes 51 minutes, and from Changsha South it takes about two hours, with departures only from late morning onward. Walking into the old town is free — there has been no entry ticket for the streets since 2016, and you pay only for the individual sights you go into. Is Fenghuang worth it, and how many nights?

Yes, if you are already in Zhangjiajie or Changsha. Fenghuang is an old walled riverside town in the far west of Hunan province: stone-paved lanes, wooden houses on stilts over the Tuo River (沱江, Tuójiāng), stepping stones across the water, and a riverfront lit with red lanterns at night. It is also a very popular domestic destination, so the main lanes are lined with shops, snack stalls and bars, and summer weekends and Chinese holidays are crowded. Go in knowing that, and time your walks for early morning and late evening, when the river is at its best and the day groups have left.

One night covers the town itself. Arrive by early afternoon, walk the lanes and the riverbank, see the night view, then get up early for the river at dawn and leave after lunch. Two nights give you a full day for the countryside around the town: a Miao village, the Southern Great Wall, or the Dehang canyon near Jishou. A third night only makes sense if you want a slow stay with nothing planned.

Where it is. Fenghuang is one of the seven counties of the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (湘西, Xiāngxī, "west Hunan"), in the northwest of Hunan where Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing and Guizhou meet; ethnic minorities, mainly Tujia (土家族) and Miao (苗族), make up 79.3% of the prefecture's population. You will see Miao silverwork, embroidery and indigo cloth for sale all over town.

A little history. The town was founded in 1556, during the Ming dynasty; it is the hometown of the writer Shen Congwen (沈从文), and the New Zealand writer Rewi Alley called it the most beautiful small town in China. Shen Congwen's novel Border Town (《边城》, Biānchéng) is set in this region, and many Chinese visitors come because they read it at school. Fenghuang became a national historic and cultural city in December 2001, and its old fortifications and Shen Congwen's former residence became a nationally protected site in June 2007. In 2024 the old town and Nanhua Mountain behind it were rated a national 5A scenic area, the top grade in China's tourist-site system.

When to go. Long-term averages are published for nearby Zhijiang rather than Fenghuang itself: January averages 5.3°C, July averages 27.4°C, and May, June and July are the wettest months of the year. In practice:

• September to early November is the best time: settled weather, comfortable walking temperatures, and the river is usually calm. Avoid the first week of October (Golden Week, China's National Day holiday), when the lanes fill shoulder to shoulder.
• March to April is pleasant but often misty and drizzly, which suits photos of the river.
• May to July is the rainy season. Heavy storms can stop the river boats and flood the riverside lanes (see the flood section below).
• Winter is cold and damp, but quiet. Most guesthouses have air conditioning; few have proper heating, so ask.

How to get to Fenghuang by high-speed train

Fenghuang has its own high-speed station, Fenghuang Ancient Town Station (凤凰古城站, Fènghuáng Gǔchéng Zhàn). It is on the Zhangjiajie–Jishou–Huaihua high-speed line, which opened on 6 December 2021, runs 245 km and has seven stations from Zhangjiajie West to Huaihua South. Older guides that tell you to take a 3.5- to 5-hour bus from Zhangjiajie or Changsha are out of date; the train is far faster.

The train counts and fares below come from 12306, the China Railway booking system, for one sample travel day, Thursday 5 November 2026. Counts change by day and season, so treat them as a guide and check the exact trains for your date.

From Zhangjiajie West

This is the most common way in. About 18 trains are scheduled from Zhangjiajie West to Fenghuang Ancient Town on the sample day, leaving between 07:05 and 19:20; the fastest takes 51 minutes, most take just under an hour, and second class costs 77–93 yuan. Going back the other way is the catch: only about 11 trains run from Fenghuang to Zhangjiajie West that day, and the first one leaves at 12:43 — there are no morning trains. So the easy order is Zhangjiajie first, then Fenghuang. If you must go back to Zhangjiajie, plan an afternoon train. From Changsha

Use Changsha South (长沙南, Chángshā Nán), not Changsha Station. About 9 direct trains run from Changsha South to Fenghuang Ancient Town on the sample day, but the first leaves at 11:26 and the last at 18:45; the fastest takes 1 h 57 min, a typical trip about 2 h 7 min, and second class costs 175–207 yuan. Changsha Station (长沙站) has only one train each way, which goes the long way round via Zhangjiajie and takes about three to three and a half hours. With no morning departures from Changsha South, a Changsha-to-Fenghuang day usually means a morning in Changsha and an early-evening arrival. See the Changsha guide for the city itself.

From Huaihua South, Guizhou and further south

Huaihua South (怀化南, Huáihuà Nán) is the rail junction just south of Fenghuang, where the line meets the main lines to Guizhou and beyond. Fenghuang Ancient Town to Huaihua South is a short hop: about 21 trains on the sample day, around 25 minutes, 35–42 yuan in second class. Trains also run the opposite way, so travelers coming up from Guiyang can change at Huaihua South. In June 2024 direct trains between Zhangjiajie West and Hong Kong West Kowloon, stopping at Fenghuang Ancient Town, were introduced; check 12306 to see whether they still run on your date.

Booking the train with a foreign passport

You can book on 12306 with a foreign passport, and the China Railway 12306 English site accepts foreign passports. Tickets go on sale 15 days ahead, counting the day of travel. At the station, passport holders use the staffed lane rather than the automatic gates, so arrive a little earlier than you would with an ID card. From the station to the old town

Fenghuang Ancient Town Station is about 10 km from the old town. You have two practical options:

• Taxi or ride-hailing. The simplest choice with luggage. Use DiDi or the official taxi rank, and ask the driver to take you to the gate or lane nearest your guesthouse, because cars cannot drive into the old lanes. Have your guesthouse name in Chinese ready on your phone. See the DiDi guide.
• The Fenghuang maglev. A sightseeing maglev line opened in July 2022 to connect the station side with the town; its Lansheng stop (揽胜站) looks down over the Tuo River and connects by lift and walkway to the riverside promenade. Check the current fare and operating hours at the station before you rely on it, especially for a late arrival.

Allow time for the transfer when you plan your departure, and check the traffic on holiday weekends, when the roads into town back up.

Flying in

Xiangxi also has a small regional airport, Biancheng Airport in Huayuan county, which opened in August 2023 and has six scheduled domestic routes and no international flights. Also check flights to Tongren Fenghuang Airport in neighbouring Guizhou. For most foreign visitors it is easier to fly into Changsha or Zhangjiajie and take the train. Changsha Huanghua's published international routes are limited, so if there is no direct flight from your country, check airlines or connect through Shanghai or another hub. Tickets: do you need one to enter Fenghuang?

No. From 2013 to 2016 visitors had to buy a 148-yuan ticket just to enter the old town, but the county stopped checking tickets at the town entrances on 10 April 2016; since then the streets, lanes, riverbanks and bridges you walk on are free, and only the individual sights check tickets. If someone at the edge of town tells you that you need a ticket to walk in, you do not.

Under Hunan's 2025 government price list (check the current price at the ticket window, since the list is updated), the ticketed sights are priced as follows: Shen Congwen's Former Residence 20 yuan, Xiong Xiling's Former Residence 10 yuan, and Wanshou Palace, the Ancient Town Museum, the Yang Family Ancestral Hall, the East Gate Tower, Chongde Hall and the Rainbow Bridge 5 yuan each. On the same 2025 list, the Tuo River boat is an optional 85 yuan, and a combo ticket covering the eight sights plus the boat is 128 yuan. The prices come from the Hunan Development and Reform Commission's scenic-area price list.

Combo or single tickets? At 2025 prices, the eight sights bought one by one come to 60 yuan, or 145 yuan with the boat, against 128 yuan for the combo. So the combo makes sense only if you want the boat and most of the houses. If you are not interested in the boat, buy single tickets for the two or three places you actually want to see. 1. Shen Congwen's Former Residence (沈从文故居) — a small courtyard house with his manuscripts and photos. Worth it if you know Border Town or want to see a well-kept old family home.
2. The East Gate Tower (东门城楼) — the old gate in the town wall, with views over the rooftops and the river.
3. The Yang Family Ancestral Hall (杨家祠堂) — a family temple with a carved wooden stage, a good example of the clan halls built by wealthy local families.

Xiong Xiling's Former Residence (熊希龄故居) is the childhood home of a Fenghuang man who became premier of the early Republic of China; it is a quick visit and matters most to history readers.

Where to buy. Ticket offices sit at or near each sight, and the boat tickets are sold at the piers. Opening hours vary by sight and season, so confirm them at the ticket window, and carry your passport. Windows usually take cash and mobile payment. The official price list notes that Hunan's standard concessions apply, but those are usually tied to Chinese ID documents, so do not count on a discount with a foreign passport — ask at the window.

What to see in the old town

The old town is small. You can walk the riverbank from end to end in well under an hour, and the whole area can be covered in a day without hurrying. Most of the value is in the walking itself, not in the paid sights. The lanes number more than 30, connected by stone-paved streets; it is easy to get turned around, so use the river as your guide — downhill usually leads back to the water.

The Tuo River and the stilt houses

The Tuo River runs right through the old town, and the views along it are what Fenghuang is known for. The most photographed row of stilt houses (吊脚楼, diàojiǎolóu) is at Huilongge (回龙阁) in the southeast of the old town: a 240-meter line of wooden houses built between the Qing dynasty and the early Republic, with the old road in front and the back of each house hanging over the river on wooden posts; a dozen or so families still live there. The best view of them is from the opposite bank, or from the middle of the Rainbow Bridge.

Go twice: once around sunrise, when there are few people, the light is soft and locals wash clothes and vegetables on the river steps; and once after dark. At night the stilt houses on both banks are lit up and red lanterns reflect on the water, and the river boats leave from the North Gate pier. The lights come on around dusk; ask your guesthouse for tonight's time.

The Rainbow Bridge, the stepping stones and the North Gate

• Rainbow Bridge (虹桥, Hóngqiáo) — the covered bridge in the middle of town, with shops on the lower level. The Rainbow Bridge is one of the eight ticketed sights on the price list. The ticket covers the upper floor; ask at the entrance. It is the easiest landmark to find your way back to.
• The stepping stones (跳岩, tiàoyán) — a line of square stone blocks across the river near the North Gate, plus a narrow wooden footbridge beside them. Crossing them is free and is the classic Fenghuang photo. The stones are often wet and the gaps between them are wide enough to slip into; take your time, keep your phone in a pocket while you cross, and do not try it after heavy rain or when the water is high.
• North Gate Tower (北门城楼) — the old north gate of the town wall, right on the river. The stepping stones and the boat pier are just outside it, so this is where most people start.

The river boat

The boats are wooden, flat-bottomed and poled by a boatman, and they drift downstream from the North Gate pier past the stilt houses. On the 2025 price list the ride costs 85 yuan on its own and is included in the 128-yuan combo; check the price at the pier. It is a relaxed way to see the stilt houses from water level. Boats stop during heavy rain and high water, so if the river is brown and fast, check at the pier.

Nanhua Mountain and the evening show

Nanhua Mountain (南华山) is the forested hill on the south side of town and part of the same 5A scenic area as the old town. It is a separate ticket of 88 yuan under the 2025 price list; check at the gate. The climb gives a view down over the rooftops and the river bend; skip it if you are short of time, because the riverbank views are free. The town also has an immersive evening show on the river, "Xiangjian Tuojiang" (湘见沱江, roughly "seeing Hunan on the Tuo River"), priced at 168 yuan in the same 2025 list; check the price, performance days and times locally.

A simple one-day walk

1. Early morning: the river at dawn from the Rainbow Bridge, then the stepping stones near the North Gate before the crowds.
2. Mid-morning: the East Gate Tower and Shen Congwen's Former Residence, then wander the lanes on the north bank.
3. Lunch: a few lanes back from the river, where it is cheaper and quieter.
4. Afternoon: cross to the south bank and walk past the Huilongge stilt houses; climb Nanhua Mountain if you have the energy, or rest at your guesthouse.
5. Evening: the boat at dusk, dinner, then the lit-up riverbank.

Miao villages and the Southern Great Wall

With a second day, head into the countryside. Fenghuang county has 128 protected heritage sites, and its national intangible heritage includes Miao silver forging, Miao medicine and Fenghuang paper crafts; the Miao "April 8" flower-jumping festival and "June 6" song festival are the big local festivals. Several villages and sites around the town are run as ticketed scenic areas. These are the prices on Hunan's 2025 price list; check the current price at each ticket office:

• Southern Great Wall (南方长城, Nánfāng Chángchéng) — 45 yuan. A restored stretch of old defensive wall running over the hills outside Fenghuang. It is not the Great Wall near Beijing, and it is much smaller, but the walk along the top is easy and the countryside views are good.
• Miao villages — Miaoren Valley (苗人谷) 68 yuan, Zhushan Miao Village (竹山苗寨) 80 yuan, and Laojiazhai (老家寨) 58 yuan. These are organized for visitors, with performances, silverwork and lunch, so treat them as an introduction to Miao culture rather than everyday village life.
• Shanjiang Museum scenic area (山江博物馆) — 68 yuan. A Miao culture museum in the Shanjiang area, a good choice if you prefer exhibits to staged performances.
• Dehang and the Aizhai Bridge near Jishou — Dehang (德夯) 80 yuan and the Aizhai Bridge scenic area (矮寨大桥) 95 yuan. Dehang is a Miao village in a steep limestone canyon with waterfalls; it is the biggest landscape trip from Fenghuang but also the longest, so it fills a whole day.

Huangsiqiao (黄丝桥古城), an old stone fort in the county, is described by the Hunan government as one of the best-preserved castles in China.

How to get there. Public transport to these sites is limited and hard to use without Chinese. The practical options are a taxi or car with a driver for the day, or a local tour booked through your guesthouse. Agree the full price, the stops and the return time before you set off, and save the driver's number. A good two-site day is the Southern Great Wall in the morning and a Miao village in the afternoon. What to eat and where to stay

Food

West Hunan food is spicy, sour and smoky, with a lot of pickles and cured meat. It is part of Hunan cuisine, one of China's eight great cuisines, and Hunan's provincial government lists cured meats from western Hunan among the dishes visitors should try. Hunan's tourism department picks out these local dishes:

• Duck with blood cake (血粑鸭, xuěbā yā) — duck braised with chili and pieces of cake made from duck blood and sticky rice; one of the most typical Xiangxi dishes. It is rich and spicy, and better than it sounds.
• Rice tofu (米豆腐, mǐ dòufu) — soft, smooth squares made from rice, served in a bowl with chili oil, pickles and peanuts. A cheap snack sold all over town.
• Xiangxi cured pork (湘西腊肉, Xiāngxī làròu) — pork smoked until the fat is waxy and the lean meat is dark red, usually stir-fried with garlic shoots or dried chili.
• Sour fish (酸鱼, suān yú) — river fish preserved and cooked with sour pickles and chili; a regional dish you will find on most restaurant menus.
• Ginger candy (姜糖, jiāng táng) — a chewy candy made from ginger and sugar, pulled by hand on hooks in shop fronts. Some shops offer a taste.

Restaurants with a river view charge more for the view; walk two or three lanes back from the water for cheaper and often better food. Many places have picture menus, and almost everywhere takes mobile payment, so set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you go (see how to use Alipay with foreign cards) and carry a little cash as a backup. Where to stay

Stay in or right next to the old town; the station is too far out to be a good base. Most rooms are in small guesthouses (客栈, kèzhàn) in old wooden or rebuilt houses. Things to weigh up:

• River view vs quiet. A riverside room with a balcony over the Tuo River is the classic Fenghuang stay. But the bar street along the river plays loud music well into the night. If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room away from the bars, or stay a lane or two back from the water and walk to the river for the views.
• Flood season. From May to July, pick a room above street level, and choose a guesthouse that is not right on the lowest riverside lane.
• Stairs and luggage. Many guesthouses have steep wooden stairs and no lift, and the lanes are cobbled. Travel light, or ask the guesthouse to meet you at the nearest road.
• Check the location pin. Some listings called "riverside" are a short walk from the water. Look at the map and recent photos, and ask whether the room faces the river or an inner courtyard.

Practical tips and where to go next

Flood season and safety

The Tuo River rises quickly in heavy rain. In late June 2020 a sudden storm raised the river and all water activities, including the boats, were suspended and were still stopped the next morning, until the water went down, and in June 2022 heavy rain flooded parts of the old town's streets and rescue boats were used to move residents and visitors. These are examples, not a forecast, but they show the pattern: early-summer storms can close the boats and flood the riverside lanes. If you visit between May and July, check the weather and local notices, keep away from the stepping stones and riverside steps when the water is high, and follow staff instructions if a lane is closed.

Other practical points:

• Shoes: the stone paving and steps are slippery when wet. Wear shoes with grip.
• Rain gear: bring a light rain jacket in any season.
• Crowds: avoid Chinese public holidays if you can; see the China holiday calendar.
• Night out: the bar street is lively and generally safe, but keep an eye on drinks and on the bill before you pay.
