Sanya Beach Resort Guide: Which Bay to Choose, Wuzhizhou Island, Sea Safety and a 4–5 Day Plan

Plan four to five days in Sanya (三亚, Sānyà), the beach city at the southern tip of Hainan Island (海南, Hǎinán), and base yourself in one bay, or two if you want a change. That gives you two beach days, one day on Wuzhizhou Island, one day for Nanshan and the west coast, and room to move things around if the sea is too rough for boats. Stay in Yalong Bay for a simple beach-and-pool holiday, Dadonghai if you want to walk to dinner and spend less, Haitang Bay for a big resort and duty-free shopping, and Sanya Bay for the lowest cost and the easiest airport run. December to March is the driest time of year. Book early for Chinese New Year, because flights and hotels fill up fast.

How many days in Sanya, and when to go

Four to five days suits a first visit. Sanya is a place for beaches and hotels, and the sights are spread along the coast, so three days feels rushed unless you only want the beach. If you have more than five days, add Haikou (海口, Hǎikǒu), the provincial capital, or the east coast of the island, which the Hainan travel guide covers.

Sanya is warm all year, so the real choice is between dry months and wet ones. These are the long-term monthly averages from China's weather service for 1981–2010:

• December to March is the best stretch for most people: warm days, cooler nights and little rain. It is also when hotels are busiest and charge the most. Pack a light layer for the evening.
• November and April are good months to pick if you want warm weather without the winter rush, as long as you avoid public holidays.
• May to October is the rainy season, hot and humid, with October the wettest month. Hotels are usually cheaper, but you should accept some lost beach time.

The sea is warmest in summer. China's national beach water report measured 27.5–27.8°C at Dadonghai, Yalong Bay and Queen Bay on 20 July 2026. Expect cooler water in winter, above all on windy days. If winter swimming matters to you, check that your hotel has a heated pool before you book.

Typhoons are the other reason to think about dates. Hainan's first typhoon landfall of the year normally comes in early August, but it has come as early as 18 April and as late as 23 November. The risk carries on late in the year: a November landfall on Hainan Island happens roughly one year in ten. If you travel between June and November, book flights and hotels you can change, and check the forecast a few days before you leave.

Chinese New Year is the busiest time of all. During the nine-day holiday in 2026 (15–23 February), Sanya received about 3.31 million visitors, and its airport handled 4,080 flights. In 2027 the first day of the new year falls on 6 February; check the official mainland holiday notice before you fix your dates. On entry, people from 61 countries can visit Hainan without a visa for up to 30 days on an ordinary passport. You must enter China at a port in Hainan, so a flight that connects through Shanghai or Guangzhou does not qualify, you must stay within Hainan, and the scheme does not cover work, study or journalism; check the current list before you fly. Which bay to stay in

Pick your bay first and your hotel second. The bays sit apart along the coast, you need a taxi or a train to move between most of them, and the one you choose decides whether you can walk to dinner or eat at your hotel every night.

Yalong Bay is the first choice if the beach is the point of the trip. The resort area is about 25 km southeast of the city, measured to the Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise park behind the bay. Large resorts line the sand, and you will mostly eat and swim at yours. It has its own railway station, which helps if you arrive from Haikou.

Dadonghai is the best base if you are nervous about being stuck in a resort. It was the first of Sanya's bays to be developed, and hotels, restaurants and malls sit right next to the beach. It usually costs less than Yalong Bay or Haitang Bay, and most of what you need is on foot.

Sanya Bay is the long city beach, 22 km from end to end. It suits tight budgets and short stopovers. It is a good place for an evening walk, but it is not the place to choose for the best swimming.

Haitang Bay lies in the north of Sanya, with more than 10 km of sand. This is where you find the very large resorts, including Atlantis Sanya with its water park, plus the pier area for Wuzhizhou Island and the main duty-free mall. It is a good choice for a family that wants to stay on one site, and a poor one if you want to see the city.

In order of distance from the airport, the bays run Sanya Bay, Dadonghai, Yalong Bay, Haitang Bay; put your hotel into a map app to see the drive time for your arrival.

If you can't decide, split the stay: two nights in Dadonghai for food and walking, then two or three in Yalong Bay or Haitang Bay for the resort. Compare hotels on Booking.com or Agoda, and filter by bay name, because a hotel listed as "Sanya" can be a long way from any of these beaches. Wuzhizhou Island

Wuzhizhou Island (蜈支洲岛, Wúzhīzhōu Dǎo) is in Haitang Bay and is the trip most visitors should make if they want to be in the water, not only beside it. The water is the main reason to go. Skip it if you dislike crowds and plan to sit on a beach anyway, since the island gets very full on holiday dates.

• Ticket: the island's official ticket page showed 144 yuan for an adult on 1 November 2026, covering entry and the return boat. The provincial price list sets a ceiling of 144 yuan from 1 October to 30 April and 136 yuan from 1 May to 30 September.
• Boats: boats to the island run 8:30–16:00 and boats back run 9:00–18:30, but the times depend on the sea and the weather, so check that day's notice. The crossing itself is short. Take a first-morning boat, because the queues build through the day.
• Getting around the island: the electric cart is listed at 60 yuan, and some parts of the loop road can only be done by cart, not on foot.
• Discounts: children 1.2 m or under, or aged 6 or under, go free; people aged over 6 and under 18, people aged 60–69 and full-time students up to bachelor's level get half price at the ticket window with valid ID. The rules ask for ID without naming passports, so confirm at the window that yours is accepted.

Boats and the beach both depend on the sea. The swimming beach is an open swim area, and its hours are set each day by the weather and sea conditions. The island has closed for typhoons before, as it did for Typhoon Wutip in June 2025. There is no simple wind number to watch, so read the notice on the morning you plan to go, and do this trip early in your stay so you have another day to try.

The ticket covers entry and the return boat, so check what snorkelling, diving and other sea activities cost on the official site. Operators in Sanya must display what each activity includes, how long it lasts, what it costs, the insurance and how to complain. Read that board before you pay, and if you have never dived before, ask who will be in the water with you.

Ask your hotel about a car to the pier. You can also check island packages on Klook, and compare them with the official price before you buy. Take your passport with you.

Nanshan, Tianya Haijiao and the other sights

Most of Sanya's sights take half a day or less, so pick two or three. The table shows official prices and hours. Most figures come from the Hainan provincial scenic-area price list, which gives benchmark or ceiling prices, not necessarily what you pay at the gate, so confirm the price when you book.

Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone

Nanshan (南山文化旅游区, Nánshān Wénhuà Lǚyóu Qū, "South Mountain cultural park") is the sight to choose if you only do one. It is a large Buddhist park in Yazhou District, and its best-known sight is the huge statue of Guanyin (观音, Guānyīn), the Buddhist figure of compassion, standing in the sea. The benchmark ticket is 108 yuan, which can move 20% up or down in high season, the electric cart is 25 yuan, and the park is open 08:00–17:00. The park is big and has little shade, so take the cart and allow half a day.

Tianya Haijiao

Tianya Haijiao (天涯海角, Tiānyá Hǎijiǎo, "the edge of the sky and the corner of the sea") is a coastal park about 23 km southwest of the city, known for large inscribed rocks by the water. The name matters a great deal to Chinese visitors, because this was once seen as the far end of the empire. For most foreign visitors it is a pleasant seaside walk, and it is worth adding because it is on the way to Nanshan.

It has been free for Chinese and foreign visitors since 1 June 2023, but you must make a zero-yuan booking first: search 天涯海角游览区 in WeChat, Meituan or Alipay, then show valid ID at the gate. If the booking page won't accept your passport, ask your hotel to help or check with staff at the entrance. The park is open 08:00–18:00, and the electric cart has a ceiling price of 25 yuan.

Luhuitou

Luhuitou (鹿回头, Lùhuítóu, "the deer turns its head") is the hill park above the city. Tickets are free, the cart has a ceiling price of 28 yuan, and it stays open 08:00–22:30. Those late hours make it the best evening outing here: go up before sunset and look over the bays and the city.

Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise

Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise (亚龙湾热带天堂森林旅游区, "Yalong Bay tropical forest park") sits in the hills behind the bay and is the easy choice if you are staying in Yalong Bay and want a break from the sand. The benchmark ticket is 90 yuan, the suspension bridge is 20 yuan and the park shuttle is 42 yuan, and it is open 07:30–18:30. Go in the morning, before the heat builds.

Other options

• Daxiaodongtian (大小洞天, Dàxiǎo Dòngtiān, "the great and small grotto heavens"): a seaside park in Yazhou District near Nanshan, with free tickets, a cart with a ceiling price of 28 yuan and hours of 08:30–17:30. Choose it over Tianya Haijiao if you prefer rocks and coast and want a quieter walk.
• West Island (西岛, Xīdǎo): a second island option off the west coast, with a ticket ceiling of 98 yuan in high season and 95 yuan in low season, plus a 35-yuan cart; check whether the boat is included. It also closes during typhoons, so check before you go.
• Yanoda Rainforest (呀诺达, Yànuòdá): outside Sanya in Baoting, with a combined ticket at a benchmark of 90 yuan and hours of 08:30–18:00. The Hainan guide lists it with the island's other sights.

Nanshan, Tianya Haijiao and Daxiaodongtian are all on the west side, so do them on the same day. The Sanya–Ledong tourist railway can help. At its launch in November 2024, the ride from Sanya Railway Station took 18 minutes and cost 6 yuan to Tianya Haijiao station, and 29 minutes and 12 yuan to Nanshan North station; check current fares before you go. Check how far each station is from the park gate in a map app, or simply book a car for the day.

Staying safe in the sea

Sanya's beaches are open sea, and the water can change quickly even when the sky is clear. Most problems come from swimming when a beach is closed or from buying a water activity without checking who runs it.

Swim where and when the beach is open. The sea area at Dadonghai is open 8:30–18:30, and the swimming zone closes when the waves are big. Lifeguard hours vary by beach, so confirm them with your hotel or at the beach. Don't swim after dark, and don't swim alone, even at a resort beach that looks calm.

Know what a rip current looks like. A rip current is a strong flow of water moving away from the shore. It often shows up as a channel of darker or choppier water with no breaking waves. If one takes you, don't try to swim straight back. Stay calm, swim sideways along the beach until the pull weakens, then head in, and wave for help if you can't.

Watch for jellyfish. If you see them in the water or washed up on the sand, ask staff before you go in, and don't touch them. If you get stung, leave the water, tell a lifeguard or hotel staff, and get medical help if the pain is strong or you feel dizzy or short of breath.

Check any water activity before you pay. Sanya's sea and air tourism measures, in force since 1 May 2026, require equipment to pass inspection, drivers, instructors and lifeguards to be certified, operations to stop in bad weather, and prices, insurance and complaint channels to be displayed. The same rules ban overcharging, pressure selling and touting. Book through your hotel or a scenic area with a fixed ticket office, not with someone who approaches you on the sand. As a safety rule, don't drive a jet ski yourself unless you hold the right licence, and don't let an operator take you into the core and buffer zones of the coral reserve around West Island and East Island, which a 2025 Tianya District notice warned against. This covers those protected zones only, not all of West Island.

Treat typhoon warnings as final. When a typhoon comes, sea trips stop across the whole city. During Typhoon Wutip in June 2025, Sanya suspended all high-risk mountain, water and air activities, and Wuzhizhou Island and West Island shut. During a typhoon on 25 August 2026, the Dadonghai and Yalong Bay swimming zones closed and ferries at Haikou stopped. Take the sun seriously. The sun here can burn you quickly, even in January. Use sunscreen, wear a hat, take a long-sleeved swim top for boat trips, and stay in the shade around midday.

In an emergency, call 120 for an ambulance, 110 for the police, or 12395 for an accident on the water. The operator may not speak English, so ask hotel or beach staff to call for you if they are nearby. Eating seafood without being overcharged

The usual way to eat seafood in Sanya is to choose it live, have it weighed, and pay a restaurant to cook it. First Market (第一市场, Dìyī Shìchǎng) in the city centre is the name you will hear most. This is also where disputes happen, so go in knowing the rules. Prices move with the season and the catch, so check the price on the tag each time instead of relying on a figure from a guidebook.

Sanya has specific rules for seafood restaurants. They must use standard price labels with one picture, one tag and one price for each item, and must display the government-set seafood prices and their cooking fees where you can see them. These rules are valid to 16 June 2027. That gives you a simple test: if a place has no tags, no board and no cooking fee on show, eat somewhere else.

1. Before you choose, ask for the price per 500 g (one jin, 斤, jīn, the unit Chinese markets use) and the cooking fee, and take a photo of the tag.
2. Watch the weighing, and take a photo of the scale with your seafood on it.
3. Agree the total on a phone calculator before anything goes to the kitchen.
4. Ask for an itemised bill, and check it before you pay.

The penalties are serious. Across Hainan, selling short weight on seafood carries a fine of up to 2,000 yuan, rising to as much as 500,000 yuan in the worst cases, and cheating on ingredients in cook-for-you seafood can also reach 500,000 yuan. In one published case, a Sanya shop that swapped customers' live seafood for dead or frozen seafood on seven orders was fined 500,000 yuan and closed for three months.

To complain in Sanya, use the consumer hotline 12315, the city service line 12345, or the 12315 WeChat platform. Seafood restaurants must display 12345. Older guides mention 12301 for tourism complaints, but that number was withdrawn and these complaints now go to 12345. Keep your photos and your bill, and ask your hotel to make the call if you don't speak Chinese. If you feel threatened, call 110. Getting to Sanya and getting around

Flying in

Fly to Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX) if you can. It is busy: the 2026–27 winter schedule has 44 airlines and links to 93 airports, with 13 airlines on international and regional routes. Search fares on Trip.com, and see our domestic flights guide if you are connecting from another Chinese city.

From the airport, a taxi or DiDi is the simplest way to reach any bay, especially with luggage. Sanya Bay is the closest and Haitang Bay the farthest, so check the time in a map app. Airport buses exist, but routes and times change, so confirm them on the airport's website before you rely on one.

From Haikou by train

If you land in Haikou, or want to see more of the island, the ring railway is easy. On one sample travel day (12 November 2026), about 63 trains are scheduled from Haikou East to Sanya. Haikou has several stations, so choose carefully:

• Haikou East to Sanya, east side of the island: about 42 trains, fastest 1 h 25 min, about 119 yuan in second class on the trains sampled.
• Haikou East to Sanya, west side: about 21 trains, fastest 2 h 28 min, about 152 yuan in second class on the trains sampled.
• Meilan (at Haikou's airport) to Sanya: about 42 direct trains, fastest 1 h 14 min, about 113 yuan in second class on the trains sampled.
• Haikou station to Sanya: only about 8 trains, fastest 2 h 7 min, about 129–145 yuan in second class on the trains sampled. Most travellers should use Haikou East or Meilan instead.
• Haikou East to Yalong Bay station: about 14 trains, fastest 1 h 32 min, about 114 yuan in second class on the trains sampled. This is the one to book if you are staying in Yalong Bay.

Fares vary by train, so check the price when you book on 12306 or Trip.com. The steps are in how to book train tickets, and the Hainan guide has the full island railway. Trains from the mainland are not a practical alternative: on the sample day, Beijing West to Sanya takes over 38 hours and Guangzhou Baiyun to Sanya at least 16 hours 20 minutes.

Getting around Sanya

Sanya has no metro, so trains, buses and taxis are how you get around, and most visitors end up using taxis and DiDi for nearly everything.

• Taxis and DiDi: the bays are too far apart to walk, so plan on one of these. Taxi drivers must use the meter and may not refuse you or bargain over the fare. If a driver quotes a flat price, take the next car or use DiDi. The taxi guide has the details.
• Local trains: on the sample day, about 45 trains run from Sanya station (三亚站, Sānyà Zhàn) to Fenghuang Airport station (凤凰机场站, Fènghuáng Jīchǎng Zhàn) between 07:06 and 21:55, taking 8 minutes for about 3–8 yuan in second class. About 15 run from Sanya to Yalong Bay station between 09:00 and 19:40, taking 8 minutes for about 8 yuan. Check the journey time before you buy, because a few trains go the long way round the island. Check the return times on 12306 if you are using a train to go back, and allow for a taxi from the station to your hotel.
• Public buses: these link the city with the bays and are the cheapest option, but they are slower, and routes are easiest to find in a Chinese map app (see our map apps guide). Check the route on the day, and read the public buses guide for how to pay.
• Tram: Sanya has a short tram line in the city, not a way to reach the bays. A notice dated June 2025 says tunnel work suspended the Jiangang Road and Yuejin Street stops from 4 June 2025, leaving service only between Sanya Railway Station and Guangming Street; check the current status on hotline 967000 before you plan around it.
• Driving: your home licence is not valid on its own in China, so you need a temporary driving permit before you can rent a car. Hainan launched an online pre-application for this in 2023; confirm it is working before you rely on it. For a short beach trip, a car is rarely worth the effort.

Set up Alipay with a foreign card before you arrive, since you will use it for rides, tickets and small meals.

Duty-free shopping

The main store is Sanya International Duty-Free City (三亚国际免税城, Sānyà Guójì Miǎnshuì Chéng, often called CDF Mall), which is at 118 Haitang North Road in Haitang District, not in the city centre, and is open 10:00–22:00. Foreign visitors aged 18 or over can buy with a passport and a ticket leaving Hainan, up to 100,000 yuan a year, and this also works if you fly straight out of China from Hainan. A 4–5 day Sanya itinerary

This plan assumes one or two bases and puts the sea trip early, so you have a spare day if the boats stop.

• Day 1: Arrive and settle in. Check in, swim, and eat close to your hotel. If you land late, leave the seafood market for another night.
• Day 2: Wuzhizhou Island. Check the notice in the morning and take an early boat. If you are based in Dadonghai or Sanya Bay, allow extra time to get to the pier. In the late afternoon, stop at the duty-free mall, which is open until 22:00.
• Day 3: Beach day. Spend the day at your bay. If you are in Dadonghai or Sanya Bay, take a taxi out to Yalong Bay for the sand. Go up Luhuitou before sunset, then have a seafood dinner in the city.
• Day 4: West coast. Make your Tianya Haijiao booking the night before. Reach Nanshan close to opening time, then stop at Tianya Haijiao or Daxiaodongtian on the way back.
• Day 5: Spare day or onward travel. Use it for Wuzhizhou if the boats stopped on Day 2, or for Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise, or a last beach morning before your flight. Or take the train up to Haikou and the east coast of the island: the Hainan travel guide has the route.

With four days, drop Day 5 and keep Wuzhizhou on Day 2, and swap Day 2 and Day 3 if the boats stop. Book in this order: flights, then hotels by bay, then the island ticket once you have checked the forecast. Tianya Haijiao's booking can wait until the day before.
