Pingyao Ancient City Guide: Combined Ticket, Which Station and How Many Days

Give Pingyao (平遥) one or two days, and spend at least one night inside the old city walls, when the day-trip crowds have gone and the lanes are quiet. Walking the streets, eating and sleeping inside the walls costs nothing; you only need a ticket for the city wall and the paid sights. That ticket is a combined pass for 125 yuan; the county's 2023 English ticket page says it covers 22 sights inside the walls for 3 days, one entry at each — confirm the current terms at the ticket office. Come by high-speed train to Pingyao Gucheng station (平遥古城站), not the old Pingyao station; from Taiyuan South the fastest train takes 31 minutes. For a second day, Shuanglin Temple's painted statues or a merchant family compound are the best trips outside the walls; halls at both World Heritage temples are under repair. One thing to sort out before you book: Pingyao is outside the area where Shanxi's 240-hour visa-free transit lets you stay, so you need a visa, or the 30-day visa-free entry if your passport qualifies, to come here.

How many days in Pingyao, and when to go

Pingyao is a complete walled town from the Ming and Qing dynasties, with people still living in it. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 1997 as the "Ancient City of Ping Yao", and the listing covers the walled town plus two temples outside it, Shuanglin and Zhenguo, so the heritage site is defined as "one city, two temples". Inside the walls there are about 2.25 square kilometres of streets with nearly 4,000 traditional buildings, and more than 10,000 residents still live there. That is small enough to walk across in half an hour, but there is a lot packed into it.

Here is how we would split the time:

• One day is enough for the city wall, the old Rishengchang bank, the county government office and an evening walk down South Street. It works as a day trip from Taiyuan or as a stop on the train between Beijing or Datong and Xi'an, but it feels rushed.
• One night and two days is the best fit for most people. You see the old town in the evening and early morning, when it is at its quietest, and you have time for one trip outside the walls — Shuanglin Temple, or one of the big merchant family compounds.
• Two nights makes sense if you want both the temples and a merchant compound, or if you are here for the photography festival.

Stay inside the walls if you can. The main reason to come is to be in the old town after dark and before the tour buses arrive, and you lose that if you sleep in the new town and commute in.

When to go. Pingyao has a dry continental climate, with a yearly average of about 10 °C. At Jiexiu, a weather station about 30 km away that publishes monthly averages, January averages about -3 °C, July about 25 °C, November about 5 °C and December about -1 °C. Spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) are the most comfortable months for walking all day. Summer is warm but fine, as most sights are courtyards with some shade. Winter is cold and the courtyards can be grey, but the town is much quieter, and some sights outside the walls, such as the Wang Family Compound, switch to cheaper off-season prices from 1 November (more on that below).

The Pingyao International Photography Festival (平遥国际摄影大展) is held in the old town every September: in 2025 it ran from 19 to 23 September, and the 2026 edition opened on 19 September. Expect it in mid to late September; it fills the town with exhibitions and visitors, so book rooms early if your dates overlap. Getting to Pingyao: the two stations and the trains

Pingyao has two railway stations, and they do different jobs:

• Pingyao Gucheng station (平遥古城站, "Pingyao Ancient City station") is the high-speed station. It is southwest of the old town, and all the bullet trains (G and D trains) stop here. Bus No. 108 runs from the station square to the town, to Shuanglin Temple and to the old-city scenic area.
• Pingyao station (平遥站) is the old station for slow, conventional trains (K trains). It is about a 20-minute walk from the old city.

Almost everyone arrives at Pingyao Gucheng. It is not within walking distance of the walls, so you take bus 108 or a taxi; check the current fare and frequency of bus 108 at the station, as they change. A taxi is the easy choice if you have bags, and many inns inside the walls will arrange a pickup if you message them your train number. Pingyao station is the one to use only if you come on an overnight or slow train.

Train numbers below are from 12306, China Railway's booking system, for a sample travel day, Thursday 5 November 2026. They show how many trains are scheduled that day and roughly how long they take; check the date you want on 12306 before you plan around a specific train.

From Taiyuan

Taiyuan, Shanxi's capital, is the easy way in. About 25 trains are scheduled from Taiyuan South (太原南) to Pingyao Gucheng on the sample day, leaving between 06:59 and 20:59; the fastest takes 31 minutes and most take around 39 minutes, with second-class seats at about 28–31 yuan. Four more leave from the old Taiyuan station (太原站) to Pingyao Gucheng and take about 51–61 minutes. If you prefer the slow train, four K trains run from Taiyuan station to the old Pingyao station that day, the fastest in 1 hour 16 minutes, with hard seats at 16.5 yuan. Both Taiyuan stations and Taiyuan Wusu airport are on metro Line 1, so if you fly into Taiyuan you can ride the metro to Taiyuan South and change to the train.

There is also a direct tourist bus: the "Shanxi Wenlvxing" (山西文旅行, Shanxi culture-tourism) scenic shuttle runs from the Shanxi Museum in Taiyuan to Pingyao Ancient City for 40 yuan one way, booked through the WeChat mini-program "山西文旅行". A mini-program is a small app that runs inside WeChat; before relying on the shuttle, check in the mini-program that it accepts a passport for booking. The train is quicker and simpler for most people.

From Beijing

Direct high-speed trains from Beijing are few. On the sample day there are 2 G trains from Beijing Fengtai (北京丰台), leaving at 07:12 and 10:38 and taking about 3 hours 35–42 minutes, with second class at 251 yuan; and 2 D trains from Qinghe (清河), leaving at 14:52 and 16:07 and taking 4 hours 49 minutes to 5 hours 23 minutes, at 290 yuan in second class. No train runs from Beijing West to Pingyao Gucheng that day. There is an overnight train, the K603, leaving Beijing West at 22:11 (Beijing Fengtai 22:32) and reaching the old Pingyao station after about 11.5–12 hours.

If the direct trains do not suit you, go to Taiyuan South and change there. Beijing Fengtai is the main station for that leg: about 17 trains to Taiyuan South are scheduled on the sample day, the fastest taking 2 hours 18 minutes. From Xi'an

Pingyao sits on the high-speed line between Taiyuan and Xi'an, so many people stop here between Beijing and Xi'an. From Xi'an North (西安北) to Pingyao Gucheng about 10 trains are scheduled on the sample day, leaving between 07:45 and 17:25; the fastest takes 2 hours 25 minutes, with second class at 159 yuan. In the other direction, about 12 trains run from Pingyao Gucheng to Xi'an North between 08:50 and 18:32, the fastest in 2 hours 27 minutes and most in just under 3 hours, at about 150–159 yuan in second class. From Datong

If you are coming from the Yungang Grottoes and the Hanging Temple, there are about 8 direct trains from Datong South (大同南) to Pingyao Gucheng on the sample day, leaving between 06:33 and 18:46; the fastest takes 2 hours 28 minutes and most about 2 hours 42 minutes, with second class at about 132–146 yuan. Visas: why Pingyao is outside the 240-hour area

China's 240-hour visa-free transit lets travellers from eligible countries stay for up to 10 days on the way to a third country, but only inside set areas. In Shanxi the only entry port is Taiyuan Wusu airport, and the permitted area is Taiyuan and Datong — not the whole province. Pingyao belongs to Jinzhong, so it is outside that area. If you are on the 240-hour transit, you can visit Taiyuan and Datong, and you can travel on to permitted areas in other provinces such as Beijing, but you should not go to Pingyao. The combined ticket: what it covers and what is free

You do not pay to enter Pingyao. Walking the streets, staying in an inn and eating in the old town are free; you only need a ticket for the city wall and the ticketed sights inside the walls. Many visitors are surprised by this, because the gates look like the entrance to a paid site.

The ticket is the Pingyao Ancient City combined ticket (平遥古城通票, tōngpiào), and the full price is 125 yuan. The county's April 2023 English ticket page sets out what it gives you, so confirm the terms at the ticket office:

• Entry to 22 sights inside the walls, including the city wall and Rishengchang.
• Valid for 3 days.
• One entry at each sight.
• Shuanglin Temple and Zhenguo Temple, outside the walls, are not included and need their own tickets.

The county's 2023 ticket page lists the ticketed sites as open 8:00–18:00 with no separate winter hours, so check the closing time at the first ticket office you visit. Sights may close earlier in the cold months.

There is a discount ticket: the county's 2023 English ticket page lists half price for students and young people aged 18 and under and free entry for people aged 60 and over, all "with valid documents" — check at the window whether this still applies. These concessions are usually checked against Chinese ID documents. Plan on the full price, and ask at the window if you think you qualify.

Where to buy it. Ticket offices are at the sights themselves; ask your inn which one is nearest, and bring your passport, as Chinese tickets are often tied to an ID. Ask your inn too whether you can buy it online. Keep the ticket (and the passport you used) on you for all three days, as you will show it at every sight.

Is it worth it? Yes, if you want to go up on the city wall or see inside Rishengchang and the old county office — those three alone are the heart of a visit. If you only want to wander the streets, eat and take photos, you can skip it. If the one-entry-per-sight rule still applies (check when you buy), do not waste a sight by popping in for five minutes; plan which ones you want and do them properly. A ticket valid for several days covers a normal two-day stay.

What to see inside the walls

The old town is laid out on a grid around four main streets, and the main sights are all within a 15-minute walk of each other. These are the ones to put first.

The city wall

The brick wall you see today was rebuilt and enlarged in 1370, early in the Ming dynasty. It is about 6 km around, 6 to 10 metres high, and has 6 gates and 72 bastions (敌台, defensive towers that stick out from the wall). Walking on top of it is part of the combined ticket. From the top you look down on grey tile roofs and courtyards on one side and the newer town on the other, and you can see how the whole old town fits inside one ring. You do not need to walk the full loop; a stretch of 30 to 60 minutes gives you the view. Go early in the morning or in the late afternoon, when the light is softer and the wall is less crowded. There is little shade up there in summer.

Rishengchang: China's first draft bank

Rishengchang (日昇昌票号, Rìshēngchāng piàohào) on West Street was founded in 1823 and is seen as China's first draft bank — a business that let merchants send money between cities on paper drafts instead of carrying silver. It had branches in more than 30 cities and is now the China Piaohao Museum (piaohao means draft bank). You walk through the original courtyards: the counter, the offices, the rooms where the managers lived. It is the best place to understand why a small town in Shanxi grew so rich, and if you only have time for one sight, make it this one. Its founding manager's house, Lei Lütai's Former Residence, is also on the ticket.

South Street and the City Tower

South Street (南大街, also called Ming-Qing Street) was the trading and money-transfer centre of the town in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and so many financial firms clustered here that it is called "China's Wall Street". The City Tower (市楼, Shìlóu) stands over the street and is the only tall building inside the old town. The street itself is free; ask at the tower whether your combined ticket covers the climb. South Street is the busiest and most commercial street in town, full of shops and restaurants; it is at its best in the evening when the lanterns are lit.

The other ticketed sights

The rest of the sights are smaller. The county's 2023 ticket page names these among others; check at the ticket office for the current list:

• Ancient County Government Office (古县衙) — the old yamen, where the county magistrate held court and ran local government. After Rishengchang, this is the sight to see next.
• Town God Temple (城隍庙) and Qingxu Taoist Temple (清虚观) — two temples, a good contrast to the merchant houses.
• Wen Temple (文庙, the Confucian temple) — where local scholars studied for the imperial exams.
• Other old banks: Baichuan Tong (百川通), Xie Tongqing Money House (协同庆) and Weishengchang (蔚盛长), plus the Museum of the Chamber of Commerce.
• Escort agencies (镖局, biāojú) — firms of armed guards who escorted silver and goods along the roads. Three are on the list: the Tongxinggong Escort Agency, the North China First Escort Agency and the Museum of China's Escort Agency. You do not need to see all three.
• The Museum of Ancient Residences, the Museum of Tianjixiang and the Exhibition Hall of Chinese Unique Newspapers.

Encore Pingyao, the evening show

Encore Pingyao (又见平遥, "Another Glance at Pingyao") is a large indoor show in a theatre just outside the West Gate. There is no fixed stage or seating: you walk from room to room as the story plays out around you, and it has been performed more than 9,700 times. Expect the performance to be in Chinese. Check show times and prices at your inn or on a booking app before you go, as the number of shows a day changes with the season.

Outside the walls: Shuanglin, Zhenguo and the merchant compounds

Two of the three parts of the World Heritage listing are temples outside the walls, Shuanglin and Zhenguo, and neither is on the combined ticket. Further out are the great mansions of the Shanxi merchant families. Right now, repairs at both temples affect what you can see, so read this before you choose.

Shuanglin Temple: 2,000 painted statues

Shuanglin Temple (双林寺) is in Qiaotou village, about 6 km southwest of the old town. Its history goes back to 571, and it holds 2,052 painted clay statues, most of them from the Ming dynasty. The statues are the reason to go — rooms full of lifelike figures of Buddhas, guardians and ordinary people, in a small, quiet temple. The full ticket is 35 yuan. Since 12 July 2026, the Qianfo Hall (千佛殿, Thousand Buddha Hall) has been under phased, semi-enclosed restoration planned to run until 31 August 2028, while the other halls stay open as normal, according to the Shanxi Cultural Heritage Bureau. So you will see most of the temple, but part of one important hall may be screened off. Bus 108 from Pingyao Gucheng station also serves Shuanglin Temple, and a taxi from the old town is a short ride.

Zhenguo Temple: one of China's oldest wooden halls

Zhenguo Temple's (镇国寺) Wanfo Hall (万佛殿, Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas) was built in 963 and is one of the few dated wooden buildings left in China from the Five Dynasties period. It was built without nails, using wooden joints, and inside are 11 painted sculptures from the same period. The full ticket is 25 yuan. But the Wanfo Hall itself is under phased, semi-enclosed restoration planned to run until 31 August 2027, while the temple's other halls stay open. Since that hall is the main reason to come, we would put Zhenguo lower on the list until the work is finished, unless you have a special interest in early timber architecture. Go by taxi or with a hired car; ask your inn how long the ride takes.

Ask your inn for the temples' current hours the day before, especially in winter.

The Wang and Qiao family compounds

Shanxi's merchant families spent their money on huge walled family compounds (大院, dàyuàn) of courtyards, carved gates and stone screens. Two are within reach of Pingyao. Neither is close enough for a casual taxi ride, so plan half a day for either, and agree the trip with a driver in advance — your inn can usually arrange one.

• Wang Family Compound (王家大院) is in Jingsheng, Lingshi County, south of Pingyao. From 1 November last winter (2025) the off-season price was 30 yuan and the hours 8:00–17:30, with ticket sales ending at 17:00; check the compound's notice for the 2026–27 season before you go. The April–October price is 55 yuan.
• Qiao Family Compound (乔家大院) is in Qiaojiabao village, Qi County, between Taiyuan and Pingyao, about 50 km from Taiyuan and 11 km from Qixian station. The adult ticket is 115 yuan. A 2019 listing gave hours of 8:00–18:30 from June to September and 8:00–17:30 in other months; confirm the current hours before you set out. The main residence, Zaizhong Hall, was started in the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty and has 6 large courtyards, 20 smaller ones and 313 rooms. The Shanxi Wenlvxing shuttle from the Shanxi Museum in Taiyuan also goes to the Qiao Family Compound, at 35 yuan one way, so it works as a return trip from Taiyuan; the shuttle runs Museum–Qiao and Museum–Pingyao as separate routes, so check in the mini-program before planning to continue from the compound to Pingyao.

How to choose: if you are coming from Taiyuan, the Qiao compound fits on the way. If you are staying two nights in Pingyao, the Wang compound is the one to reach from there. Most people only need one of them; they are similar in idea.

Getting around inside the walls

Walk. The old town covers about 2.25 square kilometres, and the main sights are close together. Wear shoes for uneven stone paving and plan to cover a good few kilometres a day.

• From Pingyao Gucheng station: bus 108 or a taxi to the walls, as above. Ask your inn which gate is nearest to it before you arrive, and send them your train time if they offer a pickup.
• From Pingyao station: about a 20-minute walk to the old city.
• With luggage: traffic rules inside the walls change, and some lanes are too narrow for cars. If your inn is deep inside the old town, ask it how to get your bags to the door — many will meet you at a gate.
• To the temples and compounds: taxi, a car hired through your inn, or bus 108 for Shuanglin. You can also try ride-hailing with DiDi; see our DiDi guide.

Paying. Most restaurants, shops and inns take Alipay and WeChat Pay, and you can link a foreign card to both — see how to use Alipay with foreign cards. Carry some cash as well for small stalls, and in case a phone payment fails.

What to eat and where to stay

Food

Shanxi is noodle and vinegar country, and Pingyao has one famous product of its own.

• Pingyao beef (平遥牛肉, Píngyáo niúròu) — salted, cooked beef served cold in slices. The Guanyun Pingyao beef traditional processing technique was added to China's national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2008. You will see it in every restaurant and in vacuum packs in the shops.
• Shanxi noodles (面食, miànshí) — knife-cut noodles (刀削面, dāoxiāomiàn) sliced straight into the pot, cat's-ear noodles (猫耳朵, māo'ěrduo), little pinched pasta shapes, and hand-pulled noodles. Shanxi's traditional noodle-making techniques are also on the national heritage list, since 2008. Order them with tomato and egg, or with a meat sauce.
• Oat noodles (莜面栲栳栳, yóumiàn kǎolǎolao) — thin rolls of oat-flour dough steamed upright in a basket like a honeycomb, dipped in a sauce.
• Wantuo (碗托, wǎntuō) — a cold, slippery buckwheat jelly cut into strips and dressed with vinegar, chilli and garlic. A cheap, sour snack.
• Aged vinegar (老陈醋, lǎochéncù) — the dark vinegar on every table. The best-known kind comes from Qingxu near Taiyuan, whose brewing technique has been national intangible heritage since 2006. People add it to noodles, dumplings and almost everything else.

Restaurants on South Street and the main crossroads are the most expensive and the most crowded. Walk a block off the main streets and prices drop. Where to stay

Stay in a courtyard inn (客栈, kèzhàn) inside the walls. Many are old merchant houses with rooms around a stone courtyard, often with a kang (炕), a heated brick bed platform. They range from simple guesthouses to restored boutique courtyards. A few things to weigh up:

• Location: rooms right on South Street or the main crossroads are convenient but can be noisy in the evening. A lane one or two blocks back is quieter and still a short walk from everything.
• Winter: old courtyard rooms can be cold and dark. If you come between November and March, check recent reviews for heating, and ask whether the kang is heated.
• Foreign guests: hotels must register foreign guests with the police, and not every small guesthouse is set up to do it. Confirm that the inn accepts foreign passports before you book. Our guide to booking hotels and registration rules explains how this works.
• Getting in: check how the inn handles arrival with luggage and whether it offers a station pickup.
• Peak dates: book well ahead for the photography festival in September, the October holiday and spring weekends.

One-day and two-day plans

One day (or a day trip from Taiyuan)

• Morning: take an early train from Taiyuan South (trains leave from 06:59 on the sample day), or start from your inn. Go up on the city wall first, while it is quiet, and walk a stretch.
• Late morning: Rishengchang, then the Ancient County Government Office.
• Lunch: noodles and Pingyao beef off the main street.
• Afternoon: two or three smaller sights — Xie Tongqing, one escort agency, the Confucian temple — then wander the lanes.
• Evening: South Street and the City Tower when the lights come on. If you are going back to Taiyuan, check the last train back on 12306 before you set out, as the return times are different from the outbound ones.

A day trip from Taiyuan works, because the train is short. But you will miss the old town in the early morning and late evening, which is when it is at its best, so stay the night if your route allows.

Two days

• Day 1: arrive by midday, check in, and do the one-day plan above at a slower pace. Evening on South Street, or Encore Pingyao.
• Day 2, morning: Shuanglin Temple for the painted statues (a short taxi ride), back in the old town by lunch. Use the rest of your combined ticket on the sights you missed; the county's 2023 ticket page gives it 3 days, so confirm the validity when you buy.
• Day 2, alternative: a half-day trip to the Wang Family Compound instead, with a hired car, and Shuanglin on the way back if time allows.
• Afternoon or evening: train on to Xi'an, Taiyuan or Datong.

Fitting Pingyao into a longer route

Pingyao is the southern end of a Shanxi trip. Most people combine it with Datong in the north (for the Yungang Grottoes and the Hanging Temple), and some add Mount Wutai (五台山, Wǔtáishān) in between. Mount Wutai has no high-speed station; direct scenic-area buses run to it from Taiyuan South, Taiyuan station and Taiyuan Wusu airport, booked in the Shanxi Wenlvxing mini-program — check fares and winter departures there. Taiyuan, where you change trains anyway, has the Shanxi Museum, which is free but must be booked in advance on its official WeChat account.
